Sleep Doctor’s Take: Leesa Legend Mattress
The Leesa Legend is designed to provide cool comfort with support where you need it most. The layered construction of this luxury hybrid results in a medium firm and cushiony surface that impressed our testers and should suit a wide range of sleepers. The Legend is an especially good fit for side sleepers and couples.
Leesa Legend Hybrid Mattress: An Introduction
Since Leesa began shipping boxed mattresses in 2014, the company’s product line has expanded to include several foam and hybrid models. The Legend Hybrid is its luxury option, featuring multiple layers of foams, springs, and microcoils, all wrapped in a cushy cover containing natural and recycled materials.
The Legend boasts a number of construction elements to ensure a plush feel, good ventilation, and medium firm support. The Legend’s multiple layers work together to provide ventilation, minimize motion transfer, maximize pressure relief, and provide support where it’s needed most.
Our testers found that the Legend lived up to its ambitions. It received very good scores in most performance categories and its drawbacks are few, making it one of the best mattresses for many. If your budget allows, the Legend deserves a closer look.
How We Review
Our testing team carefully evaluates each mattress we review, rating it in a number of performance categories. Our testers focus on the qualities that are most important when choosing a mattress. Since body size and sleep position impact mattress preferences, our team is diverse, ensuring accurate, inclusive ratings.
What’s It Like to Sleep on the Leesa Legend Mattress?
The multilayer construction of the Leesa Legend gives it a medium firm feel balanced by a soft, cushiony surface that many people find very comfortable.
If you’re a side sleeper, you are likely to appreciate the Leesa Legend. In our sleep lab, side sleepers who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds loved the mattress, rating it as excellent. It provides adaptive cushioning, while still maintaining a medium firm surface that resists sagging.
We found the Legend to have a cool feel since heat buildup is reduced by its breathable cover, ventilated foam layers, and airflow through the springs in the support layer.
Leesa Legend Mattress Pros and Cons
Pros
- Multiple layers effectively balance pressure relief and support
- Minimal motion transfer
- Sleeps cool
Cons
- May feel too firm for lighter weight sleepers
- Slight off-gassing when initially unboxed
- Available in just one firmness option
Sleeping Positions, Body Weight, and Firmness
Our testing team rated the Leesa Legenda Hybrid as medium firm, scoring a 6 on our firmness scale of 1 to 10. This level of firmness provides a good balance of softness and support, and is a good choice for many sleepers.
As our team evaluates a mattress, we consider factors that affect mattress preference, like body size and favored sleep position. Our testers found that the Leesa Legend’s multilayered construction was most comfortable for side sleepers, especially those who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds. It also impressed side sleepers over 230 pounds and back sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds.
Leesa Legend Sleeper Ratings
Under 130 lbs. | 130-230 lbs. | Over 230 lbs. | |
---|---|---|---|
Side Sleepers | 3/5 | 5/5 | 4/5 |
Back Sleepers | 3/5 | 4/5 | 3/5 |
Stomach Sleepers | 3/5 | 3/5 | 2/5 |
Side Sleepers
The Legend’s ability to cushion side sleepers’ pressure points while providing medium firm support earned it an excellent rating from our mid-weight side sleeping testers. The mattress’s zoned support combined with memory foam’s ability to cradle the body’s contours earned very good marks from our heavier testers. Lighter side sleepers might be happier on a slightly softer mattress, like the Leesa Original.
Back Sleepers
Most testers who sleep on their backs liked the Legend’s ability to cushion the lower back area while still providing enough support to maintain spinal alignment. Back sleepers in the mid-weight range gave very good marks to the Legend. Because lighter sleepers exert less pressure on the mattress’s foam, it provides less cushioning for them. Lightweight back sleepers might be more comfortable on the plush Leesa Original.
Stomach Sleepers
Stomach sleepers do best on a mattress that is firm enough to keep their spines properly aligned while still providing some cushioning to the front of their bodies. Our stomach sleepers under 230 pounds were satisfied with the Legend, but stomach sleepers over 230 pounds might consider firmer mattresses for better support.
Our Performance Ratings
Our testers use a five-point rating scale to rate a mattress’s performance. Testers give the mattress rating in each category, ranging from poor (1) to excellent (5).
Pressure Relief
Rating: 4/5
Our testers gave the Leesa Legend high marks for its ability to cushion and cradle the body. The memory foam in the comfort system gently conforms to the sleeper’s body. Our testers found that Legend provided cushioning where it is needed most, especially around the hips and shoulders of side sleepers. The cradling feeling of the foam is balanced by more supportive elements of the mattress, like the layers of coils and sturdy polyfoam.
Temperature Neutrality
Rating: 4/5
Several elements of the Leesa Legend contribute to its very good temperature neutrality. The layer of foam closest to the sleeper’s body has air channels that keep it ventilated and prevent the buildup of body heat. The pocketed springs of the support core allow good air circulation throughout the mattress. Even our testers who tend to sleep hot felt comfortable on the Legend.
Motion Isolation
Rating:4/5
Our testers rated the Leesa Legend’s motion isolation as very good. The memory foam in the comfort system is known for its ability to absorb motion, preventing its transfer. Other features, such as the combination of micro-coils and polyfoam in the zoned support layer and the pocketing of the coils in the core, also contribute to this mattress’s ability to prevent movement from reverberating across its surface.
Edge Support
Rating: 4/5
Our testing team rated the mattress’s edge support as very good, which is no surprise, given that there are special pocketed springs built into the support core’s perimeter to keep it strong. Stable edges not only make you feel steady when lying near or sitting on the edge of the bed, they also make getting in and out of bed easier.
Durability
Rating: 3/5
Our testers expect the Leesa Legend to have average durability for a hybrid, lasting around seven to eight years. Materials used to make the Legend, such as dense polyfoam layer and pocketed microcoils, are designed to delay the sagging that often occurs in mattresses with foam elements. However, how it is used and how much pressure is placed on its surface can affect how long the Legend maintains its shape.
Ease of Movement
Rating: 4/5
Our testing team found it easy to move around on the surface of the Leesa Legend. This is due to the Legend’s construction, with multiple layers that create both support and cushioning. The zoned support layer along with the pocketed coils, make this mattress responsive, with just enough bounce. Sleepers don’t sink too deeply into the mattress, making shifting positions and getting in and out of bed easy.
Sex
Rating: 4/5
For most couples, a bouncy mattress with a little cushioning makes the best surface for sex. The Legend is a very good choice when it comes to providing a space for intimate activities. The strong edge support gives couples plenty of room to move around on, and its responsive coils make movement and position changes easy. Its temperature neutrality should keep people from overheating.
Off-Gassing
Rating: 3/5
You may notice a faint chemical odor when your Leesa Legend is unboxed. This off-gassing occurs when volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the foam are released into the air. The off-gassing of the Leesa Legend is minimal and should dissipate within a few days when the mattress is in a well-ventilated area.
Rest assured the Leesa Legend has been awarded a CertiPUR-US certification, which ensures that its VOCs are within safe limits.
What Is the Leesa Legend Mattress Made Of?
With an emphasis on recycled materials, the Legend Hybrid has multiple layers that work together to provide medium firm support as well as adaptable pressure relief.
Made with organic cotton and Merino wool, the Legend’s cover material is blended with fibers made from recycled water bottles. The comfort layer contains ventilated breathable foam to cool and contour. A layer of memory foam provides pressure relief. Under the memory foam, a zoned layer of microcoils and stabilizing foam help minimize motion transfer. An underlying layer of transition foam layer bolsters support.
The Legend’s support core is constructed of almost 2000 pocketed springs, made from recycled steel, with extra edge support. All foams in the Legend mattress are Certi-PUR-US certified.

Which Leesa Mattress Is Right for You?
Leesa offers a number of mattress options, with models designed for shoppers on a budget, shoppers looking for luxury, and people looking for a mattress engineered to stay cool.
The memory foam Studio Mattress comes at a very affordable price, although it does not include the multilayered luxury of the Legend. The all-foam Leesa Original and Original Hybrid cost a bit more than the Studio, but still represent a solid value. The Sapira is made to sleep cool, though our testers found its temperature neutrality was comparable to the Legend’s.
Overall, the Legend earned the highest overall performance ratings in our sleep lab and its superior quality is reflected in its price.
