Loom & Leaf Mattress: Our Verdict

Saatva’s Loom & Leaf capitalizes on memory foam’s strengths while downplaying its weaknesses.

A blend of plush and dense memory foam cradles the body without letting the sleeper sink in too deeply. At the same time, zoned comfort layers provide reinforcement and for the back. The result is balanced cushioning and support.

Although all-foam mattresses often trap heat, the Loom & Leaf avoids this problem by using gel infusions and perforated foam to help regulate temperature. An airy cotton cover also works to draw out heat and moisture.

The Loom & Leaf comes in two firmness levels: Relaxed Firm and Firm. It’s pricier than other memory foam mattresses, but it boasts premium materials and performed well during our in-house tests. It also includes free White Glove delivery and a lifetime warranty.

Loom & Leaf Mattress: An Introduction

The Loom & Leaf is an all-foam mattress by Saatva. The online brand offers a range of luxury mattresses, from hybrids to airbeds. Each mattress includes free White Glove delivery, which is fairly uncommon in the bedding industry.

The Loom & Leaf combines memory foam comfort layers with a polyfoam support core. Gel infusions in the comfort layer are designed to increase the foam’s breathability. The organic cotton cover contains zoned memory foam to support spinal alignment. It also has a botanical sealant intended to resist bacteria and mold.

The mattress measures 12 inches thick and comes in two firmness levels. The Relaxed Firm option equates to medium firm (6) on our 10-point firmness scale, while the Firm model rates as an 8.

We’ll discuss our take on the Loom & Leaf Mattress based on our comprehensive testing to determine the best mattresses. We’ll also cover its construction and performance features, as well as purchasing tips and company policies.

How We Review

Our sleep experts combine extensive research and a rigorous testing methodology, including temperature and pressure-mapping technology, to rate each mattress we review. We also collect anecdotal evidence from our testers about their experiences with each product. These tools help us evaluate key performance features like edge support, temperature control, and motion isolation.

Since no two sleepers are alike, our testers encompass diverse body weights and sleep positions. This helps us determine how a given mattress performs for different sleep styles.

What’s It Like to Sleep on the Loom & Leaf Mattress?

The Loom & Leaf Mattress balances body-hugging pressure relief with spinal support. Softer memory foam layers cushion pressure points, while denser foam layers minimize deep sinkage. A zoned lumbar pad gives the lower back extra support.

The gel infusions and perforated foam are engineered to draw out excess heat. The breathable cotton cover also helps with temperature control.

The firm (8) option has a sturdier feel with moderate contouring. The medium firm (6) model provides more cushioning and the experience of sleeping “in” the mattress rather than “on” it.

As with any mattress, the Loom & Leaf has its pros and cons. Your sleep style and preferences can help you decide if the mattress is right for you.

Loom & Leaf Mattress Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Plush organic cotton cover with memory foam padding provides extra cushioning
  • Thick memory foam comfort system relieves pressure buildup
  • High-density polyfoam support core prevents excessive sagging

Cons

  • Emits noticeable off-gassing odors when new
  • Edge support is weaker on the medium firm model
  • More expensive than the average all-foam mattress

Sleeping Positions, Body Weight, and Firmness

We rate mattress firmness using a 10-point scale, with 1 being the softest and 10 the firmest.

The subjective feel of a mattress largely depends on your body weight. Sleepers under 130 pounds generally prefer a softer model with more sinkage. A moderately firm mattress balances cushioning and support for people between 130 and 230 pounds. People over 230 pounds tend to need a firmer mattress to get the right amount of support.

Your sleep position can also affect your firmness preferences. Side sleepers usually feel most comfortable on a softer mattress that cradles the hips and shoulders. Back and stomach sleepers require a firmer model to keep the spine properly aligned.

Factoring in your body size and sleep style can help you determine if the Loom & Leaf is right for you.

Loom & Leaf – Relaxed Firm

Loom & Leaf – Firm

Firmness: Firm (8)

Side Sleepers2/53/55/5
Back Sleepers2/54/55/5
Stomach Sleepers2/55/55/5

Side Sleepers

The plush memory foam in the Leaf & Loom cushions the hips and shoulders, the most prominent pressure points for side sleepers. Our side sleeping testers in all weight groups liked the closer hug of the medium firm (6) option. This softer feel cradles the body without allowing the hips to sink too low.

The firm (8) model also did a good job of promoting even spine alignment for our side sleepers over 130 pounds. Our testers over 230 pounds were especially impressed with this model’s sturdy support, which isn’t always the case for heavier sleepers when it comes to foam mattresses.

Side sleepers under 130 pounds, on the other hand, found the firm model a little too rigid. They reported that the medium firm provided better cushioning.

Back Sleepers

The Loom & Leaf provided balanced contouring and support for most of our back sleepers. The zoned lumbar pad evenly distributed body weight, while the plush memory foam eased tension along the spine.

Our back sleepers over 230 pounds felt the most supported on the firm (8) model, which resisted sagging below the torso. Our testers between 130 and 230 pounds liked both versions, with a slight preference for the firm model. Back sleepers under 130 pounds felt they got much more pressure relief on the medium firm (6) model.

Stomach Sleepers

Unlike softer memory foam models, the Loom & Leaf doesn’t overly conform to the midsection. The firm feel reinforced even spine alignment for our stomach sleepers over 130 pounds. However,  our testers under 130 pounds preferred the more conforming medium firm feel, which prevented excessive sinkage.

Our Performance Ratings

Mattress performance depends on a number of features. We evaluate the different factors using a five-point scale:

  • 1 = Poor
  • 2 = Fair
  • 3 = Good
  • 4 = Very Good
  • 5 = Excellent

It’s rare for a single mattress to excel in all performance areas. This means it’s important to know which features you want to prioritize so you can choose the best mattress for you.

Pressure Relief

Rating: 4/5

Our tests showed that the Loom & Leaf offers standout pressure relief, thanks to its sophisticated comfort system. The soft quilted cover cushions your body, while zoned memory foam supports the lower back. Sturdy transitional foam minimizes tension by evenly distributing body weight. The dense polyfoam support core reinforces neutral spine alignment.

The medium firm (6) model offers a little more cushioning than the firm (8), but our testers thought both models did a good job of alleviating pressure.

Temperature Neutrality

Rating: 3/5

Based on our temperature regulation tests, we found that the Loom & Leaf retained less heat than the typical all-foam model. A breathable cotton cover wicks away heat and moisture. Additionally, the mattress’ gel infusions and ventilated foam are engineered to sleep cooler than traditional memory foam.

The medium firm model doesn’t sleep quite as cool as the firm version, since it’s more conforming. However, both versions do a good job overall of preventing heat buildup.

Motion Isolation

Rating: 4/5 (Relaxed Firm), 3/5 (Firm)

Because it naturally conforms to your body, foam usually does an excellent job of absorbing motion and preventing it from traveling across a mattress. So it was no surprise when our testers reported that the foams in the Leaf & Loom were very good at preventing motion transfer.

The firm model is more responsive, so it generates a little more motion – something to keep in mind for couples or those who sleep with pets.

Edge Support

Rating: 2/5 (Relaxed Firm), 3/5 (Firm)

The Loom & Leaf has fairly robust edge support, thanks to its thick polyfoam support core. Dense transitional foam also prevents outer sagging.

However, our testers noted more sinkage on the medium firm model when they were lying down or sitting near the side of the mattress. This can potentially cause problems for those who have mobility concerns or who want to be able to use more of the sleep surface. Couples and people over 230 pounds may want to opt for the firm (8) model, which offers more support.

Durability

Rating: 3/5

Our tests showed that the Loom & Leaf is likely to resist premature wear about as well as the average foam mattress. This mattress’ thickest memory foam layer is considered relatively dense. This means it will probably hold up to nightly use better than softer types of memory foam. The comfort system is also reinforced with dense transitional foam and a solid polyfoam support core.

Given its design and high-quality materials, we expect the Loom & Leaf to perform optimally for at least six or seven years.

Ease of Movement

Rating: 3/5

Memory foam’s slow recovery time can sometimes restrict movement. However, our testers didn’t have trouble moving on the Loom & Leaf. We found that the transitional foam minimized deep sinkage, so you shouldn’t have to worry about feeling stuck. Our combination sleepers also reported that they could adjust positions fairly easily on either firmness option.

Sex

Rating: 2/5 (Relaxed Firm), 3/5 (Firm)

Couples tend to appreciate a responsive mattress during sex. While not as bouncy as a hybrid, the Loom & Leaf shouldn’t restrict movement too much. The dense transitional foam improves traction, while the memory foam makes holding positions more comfortable. Good temperature control minimizes overheating.

The firm feel permits easier movement, so it may be better for sex. It also has better edge support, which allows couples to use more of the mattress’ surface.

Off-Gassing

Rating: 2/5

The Loom & Leaf produces moderate off-gassing, which is to be expected with an all-foam mattress. The new mattress smell comes from the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) trapped inside the foam. While VOCs are generally considered harmless, the smell can be unpleasant. However, off-gassing usually dissipates fairly quickly, particularly if you leave your mattress in a room with good ventilation for at least 24 hours before using it.

What Is the Loom & Leaf Mattress Made Of?

The Loom & Leaf is an all-foam mattress available in medium firm (6) and firm (8). Both options have the same construction, except the latter has a slightly firmer memory foam layer. The mattress is 12 inches thick.

The soft organic cotton cover has a natural fire barrier made from thistle. It also incorporates quilted, zoned memory foam to support the lower back. The cover is coated with Guardin, Saatva’s natural antimicrobial treatment.

The comfort system starts with a 2-inch layer of pressure-relieving memory foam. Its gel infusions and small perforations are engineered to promote airflow. Below, a 2.5-inch layer of high-density memory foam hugs the body without permitting deep sinkage. Finally, a 2-inch layer of transitional foam prevents sleepers from sinking into the polyfoam support core.

All of the foam in this mattress is CertiPUR-US certified, meaning it’s been tested and found not to contain a variety of common harmful chemicals. It also meets strict standards for low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.

Which Memory Foam Mattress Is Right for You?

Memory foam mattresses are known for their superior pressure relief. The foam softens with heat and pressure, making it slow to recover its shape. This gives memory foam its notable close “hug.”

Sleepers who like the feeling of sleeping “in” a mattress often favor memory foam mattresses, which conform more closely than other models. Their standout pressure relief may particularly appeal to people with hip or back pain

Memory foam is also excellent at absorbing motion, so it minimizes disturbances for people who share a bed.

Due to their popularity, there are a variety of memory foam mattresses on the market. For example, the Nectar is a budget-friendly model with a versatile medium firm (6) feel. Like the Loom & Leaf, the Nectar includes a 365-night sleep trial and a lifetime warranty.

Shoppers seeking a wider range of firmness levels may want to look at WinkBeds’ Gravity Lux. This luxury mattress comes in three firmness options: medium soft (4), medium (5), and firm (7).

If you’re not sold on a memory foam design, Saatva offers other types of mattresses as well. A hybrid like Saatva’s Memory Foam Hybrid can be a cooler and bouncier alternative to the typical foam mattress.

Those who like tall and firm mattresses should look at the Saatva HD, a sturdy hybrid that’s 15.5 inches thick. It combines latex and memory foam comfort layers with responsive coils. The Saatva HD is also an excellent choice for hot sleepers.
