Sleep Doctor’s Take: Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress

The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid combines the cushiony feel of memory foam with the sturdy and responsive support of pocketed coils, making it a good option for a wide range of sleepers. Made in the U.S. with organic cotton and CertiPUR-US certified foams, the mattress received especially high marks from our side-sleeping testers who enjoy deeper contouring but don’t want to sink too far into the mattress.

Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress: An Introduction

Established in 2010, Saatva provides high-quality, handcrafted mattresses. Their products are made from sustainable materials like organic cotton, latex, and recycled steel. Saatva mattresses are made to order and sold direct-to-consumer, which helps to keep price-points more accessible.

The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress balances memory foam comfort layers with a pocketed steel coil support core. While the memory foam hugs the body and provides pressure relief, the support core prevents the sleeper’s body from sinking excessively into the mattress. Saatva includes several additional services, like a 365-night trial period, lifetime warranty, and free White Glove delivery.

We’ll highlight the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress’ construction, materials, and performance ratings. We’ll also cover its cost, where you can buy one, and what type of sleepers are best suited to the mattress.

How We Review

Our testing team conducted a range of performance tests to evaluate the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid. Our team consists of a diverse range of sleepers with varying preferences, body types, and preferred sleeping positions so that we can ensure our ratings are both inclusive and accurate. We combine all our experience and data points to help you find the best mattress.

What’s It Like to Sleep on the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid?

The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress combines the comforting hug of memory foam with the support and slight bounce of an innerspring core. The memory foam comfort layer creates a  plush surface that our testers found cradled the body and prevented pressure points from forming. This was especially for the side sleepers on our team. We also found the zoned lumbar support and innerspring coils kept sleepers from sinking too deeply into the mattress.

Although memory foam has a tendency to trap heat, testing indicated that the mattress slept cooler than similar models, as the coils in the support layer help promote airflow throughout the mattress. A layer of foam sewn into the Memory Foam Hybrid’s cotton cover is designed to provide additional breathability and cushioning.

When choosing a mattress, there are many factors to consider. Overall, we found this mattress was a good choice for people who enjoy the pressure relief of memory foam but prefer a firmer and cooler sleep surface.

Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Balances memory foam’s soothing pressure relief with medium firm support
  • Very good temperature neutrality for memory foam
  • Organic cotton cover and CertiPUR-US certified memory foam

Cons

  • Too soft for back and stomach sleepers over 230 pounds
  • Memory foam is less durable than other materials
  • Shoppers must pay a processing fee for returns during sleep trial

Sleeping Positions, Body Weight, and Firmness

The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress has a medium firm (6) feel, or a 6 on our 10-point firmness scale. This firmness level moderately contours to the body without sagging excessively, making it a good option for a wide range of sleeper types.

When rating mattress firmness, our testing team considers a number of factors, including sleep position and body size. For many people, a medium firm mattress like the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress will provide a balance of comfort and support. However, it’s important to consider your personal preferences, body weight, and primary sleep position when determining the right firmness level for your individual needs.

Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid Sleeper Ratings

Under 130 lbs.130-230 lbs.Over 230 lbs.
Side Sleepers3/55/54/5
Back Sleepers4/53/52/5
Stomach Sleepers3/53/52/5

Side Sleepers

Most side sleepers on our testing team gave high marks to the hybrid’s combination of contouring, responsiveness, and support. The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid’s balance of firmness and pressure relief particularly suited side sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds. While testers over 230 pounds gave the mattress above-average marks, testers under 130 pounds might prefer a softer surface.

Back Sleepers

Back sleepers need a mattress that keeps the spine in alignment while supporting the shoulders and hips. Back sleepers under 130 pounds on our testing team found the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid to be the most comfortable, as it offered pressure relief and prevented them from sinking too far into the mattress. Back sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds gave the mattress average marks. Back sleepers over 230 pounds found the mattress too soft and might prefer a firmer model like the Saatva Classic Firm or the Saatva HD.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers are usually most comfortable on a firmer surface that provides enough support to prevent the midsection from sinking and the spine from falling out of alignment. Stomach sleepers under 130 pounds found the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid provided very good support and pressure relief. Stomach sleepers above 130 pounds, especially those who prefer a firmer surface, might find Saatva mattresses like the Classic Firm or the Saatva HD better suit their needs.

Our Performance Ratings

Our testing team uses a five-point rating scale to assess performance. Testers consider a range of metrics, including pressure relief, temperature neutrality, motion isolation, durability, and edge support. Each category is given a rating from poor (1) to excellent (5).

Pressure Relief

Rating: 4/5

Our testing team found that the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid mattress provided very good pressure relief. The memory foam layers contour to the body, while the gel-infused memory foam in the middle third of the mattress delivers extra support to the lumbar area.

Temperature Neutrality

Rating: 4/5

Despite memory foam’s tendency to trap heat, several features of the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress work together to keep sleepers cool and comfortable.

A breathable cotton cover wicks heat away from the sleeper, and a layer of gel-infused memory foam is designed to promote more airflow and trap less heat than solid foam. Coils in the support core enable airflow throughout the mattress, enhancing temperature regulation and reducing heat retention.

Motion Isolation

Rating: 4/5

Saatva’s Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress isolates motion very well. Memory foam contours to the body, preventing movement from traveling across the mattress’ surface. Although the coils in the support core offer some bounce, the memory foam layer helps counteract this, making it a good fit for couples or people who sleep with pets.

Edge Support

Rating: 4/5

Our testers found the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress provided very good edge support. High-density foam rails around the edges create a firm perimeter. Combined with the coil support core, the rails ensure that the mattress has a large usable surface. The mattress’ sturdy edge also makes it easy for sleepers to get in and out of bed.

Durability

Rating: 3/5

Our testing team found the durability of the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress to be on par with other hybrid mattresses. While Saatva uses high-quality materials, memory foam has a tendency to soften and lose its support over time. However, the mattress’ hybrid construction should help extend its lifespan. We expect this mattress to last about seven to eight years, which is average for a hybrid mattress.

Ease of Movement

Rating: 4/5

Our testers found it was relatively easy to move across the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress. The coil support core’s responsiveness and high-density foam rails around the mattress’ perimeter help keep sleepers on top of the mattress. This construction also prevents the memory foam layers from letting sleepers sink too deeply or experience sagging when sitting on the edge of the mattress.

Sex

Rating: 3/5

The ideal mattress for sex features good temperature regulation, strong edge support, and ease of movement. The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress performs well in each of these categories. The mattress doesn’t retain heat thanks to a coil support core and breathable comfort layers. High-density foam rails allow for more usable surface area, and responsive coils make it easy to change positions and move across the bed.

However, couples who prefer a more responsive surface might find the Memory Foam Hybrid doesn’t suit their needs, as the memory foam layers may hinder changes in position.

Off-Gassing

Rating: 3/5

The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress has moderate off-gassing after being unboxed. Off-gassing occurs when volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the foam are emitted into the air after the mattress is unwrapped, creating a chemical odor. The odors are not considered to be harmful.

However, this Saatva mattress has been awarded a CertiPUR-US certification, which ensures that the foam is free of certain chemicals. Odors should dissipate within a few days when the mattress is placed in a well-ventilated area.

What Is the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid Made Of?

The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress combines comfortable layers of natural materials, beginning with an organic cotton cover. The breathable cover uses a wool flame barrier and is treated with plant-based flame retardants. A layer of gel-infused memory foam improves contouring in the lumbar region to prevent pressure points and help keep the spine aligned.

A layer of AirCradle memory foam gently contours the body while keeping sleepers cool with its unique wave design, which features air pockets and is engineered to enhance air circulation. The hybrid’s support core is made of pocketed steel coils that provide medium firm support and prevent sleepers from sinking too deeply into the mattress.

Foam rails around the edges increase the usable surface area, while an additional base layer of foam provides stability and enhances the mattress’ durability. The mattress has an 11.5-inch profile.

How Much Does the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid Cost?

Saatva mattresses are crafted in the U.S. using high-quality materials, such as organic cotton and foams that hold strict sustainable certifications. The high-end materials put this mattress at a slightly higher price-point than other memory foam hybrid mattresses.

However, Saatva reduces retail markups and warehousing costs by selling made-to-order mattresses directly to consumers. Saatva’s free White Glove delivery and old mattress removal services also help offset the slightly higher cost.
