Sleep Doctor’s Take: TEMPUR-ProAdapt Mattress

The TEMPUR-ProAdapt Mattress features contouring memory foam in its top layers. Our testers found that it excels at pressure relief and motion isolation, with its body-hugging feel working best for side sleepers. To optimize comfort, you can choose from soft (3), medium (5), or firm (7) all-foam models or a medium (5) hybrid model.

TEMPUR-ProAdapt Mattress: An Introduction

Known for its foam materials that isolate motion and conform to the body, Tempur-Pedic was the first company to popularize memory foam mattresses.

The TEMPUR-ProAdapt is a line of mattresses available in four options: soft, medium, and firm all-foam models, plus a medium hybrid version. All of the models feature high-end TEMPUR foams that deliver substantial pressure relief and motion isolation, while the hybrid model contains pocketed coils that add a degree of bounce.

How We Review

We tested each version of the TEMPUR-ProAdapt Mattress in our sleep lab as part of a comprehensive evaluation by our experienced testing team. Our protocol includes comfort assessments for different sleep positions and body weights and scoring the mattress models according to eight performance metrics.

What’s It Like to Sleep on the TEMPUR-ProAdapt Mattress?

The first thing you’ll notice when you lie down on a TEMPUR-ProAdapt Mattress is its exceptional pressure relief. The memory foam hugs the body, conforming to heavier areas and high-pressure zones. This can relieve tension and makes the TEMPUR-ProAdapt especially comfortable for side sleepers who frequently have sharp pressure points around the hips and shoulders.

Tempur-Pedic’s specially formulated memory foam layers also prevent motion from transferring across the surface of the mattress. When resting on the TEMPUR-ProAdapt, you won’t feel shaking or vibration if a bed partner gets in or out of bed or decides to change their sleeping position.

TEMPUR-ProAdapt Mattress Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Excellent comfort for side sleepers
  • Memory foam layers relieve pressure
  • All-foam models have above-average durability

Cons

  • Memory foam may permit too much sinkage for sleepers over 230 pounds
  • Contouring foam layers may be too warm for hot sleepers
  • Edge support is limited

Sleeping Positions, Body Weight, and Firmness

We use a 10-point scale to rate mattress firmness, with 1 corresponding to an extremely soft feel and 10 representing an extra hard mattress.

Keep in mind that there’s no single firmness level that’s best for every sleeper. Choosing the right mattress depends on your favorite sleeping position as well as your body weight. For example, side sleepers tend to need more soft cushioning for their hips and shoulders, while people over 230 pounds typically need a firmer bed to avoid feeling stuck in the mattress.

To help you understand whether the TEMPUR-ProAdapt Mattress is right for you, our testing team includes people of various body sizes and sleep styles.

The body-hugging feel of the TEMPUR-ProAdapt’s memory foam layers is especially comfortable for side sleepers. The mattress excels at relieving pressure around key areas like the hips and shoulders, which helps keep the spine properly aligned during sleep.

Side sleepers on our testing team who weigh less than 130 pounds preferred the plusher feels of the soft (3) and medium (5) models. Those weighing between 130 and 230 pounds liked the more balanced contouring of the all-foam medium option, while testers over 230 pounds enjoyed the more robust support of the firm (7) model.

Our back sleepers who weigh under 130 pounds preferred the medium firmness options, which delivered an excellent mix of cushioning and spinal support during our lab tests.

The soft and medium versions of the TEMPUR-ProAdapt lacked support for those over 230 pounds, with our testers noting that they sank too deeply into the bed’s memory foam. These sleepers preferred the firm option, with testers between 130 and 230 pounds giving it an excellent overall rating.

The stomach sleepers on our team generally did not find the soft and medium TEMPUR-ProAdapt models very comfortable or supportive. This is consistent with the preferences of most stomach sleepers, who usually opt for a firmer mattress that provides sturdy support under the abdomen to prevent excess bend in the lower back.

Only our testers under 130 pounds felt sufficiently supported by the medium models. However, the slightly less contouring feel of the firm option provided adequate support and cushioning for stomach sleepers of all body weights.

Our Performance Ratings

Our sleep testing team evaluated every model of the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-ProAdapt Mattress in eight performance categories. We score each category using a five-point scale from poor to excellent.

Pressure Relief

Rating: All-Foam: 4/5 | Hybrid 4/5

Tempur-Pedic is known for its adaptive and contouring memory foam materials. Both the all-foam and hybrid versions of the TEMPUR-ProAdapt Mattress contain two layers of TEMPUR memory foam. As a result, our testing team found that every model did a very good job of cradling the curves of the body and relieving pressure around key areas like the shoulders, lower back, and hips.

Temperature Neutrality

Rating: Soft: 2/5 | Medium 2/5 | Firm 3/5 | Hybrid 2/5

With the exception of the firm model, the TEMPUR-ProAdapt Mattresses scored below average on temperature neutrality in our tests. Memory foam can hug the body tightly as a person sinks into the top layers of the mattress. When the mattress surface hugs the body, it can also absorb body heat, restrict airflow, and lead to overheating.

With two top layers of deeply contouring memory foam, our sleep testers noticed that the soft all-foam, medium all-foam, and medium hybrid models had a noticeable tendency to trap body heat. This may make these versions of the TEMPUR-ProAdapt a suboptimal choice for people who tend to sleep hot.

Motion Isolation

Rating: All-Foam: 4/5 | Hybrid 4/5

All versions of the TEMPUR-ProAdapt scored very well in our motion isolation tests. Its dual-layer memory foam comfort system absorbs motion and prevents bothersome vibrations from transferring across the bed’s surface. Our sleep testers felt very little movement when another person moved around on the opposite side of the bed, making these mattresses a solid fit for couples.

Edge Support

Rating: Soft: 1/5 | Medium 2/5 | Firm 3/5 | Hybrid 3/5

In our testing, the TEMPUR-ProAdapt firm all-foam and medium hybrid models were about average in providing edge support. However, the soft and medium all-foam models lacked sturdiness when sleeping or sitting near the edge of the mattress. This isn’t out of the ordinary for mattresses with memory foam comfort layers since the compression of the foam tends to offer the least amount of support near the perimeter of the bed.

Durability

Rating: All-Foam: 4/5 | Hybrid 3/5

Mattress durability is determined by a range of factors, including a bed’s construction as well as a person’s body weight and sleep patterns. Because of its quality materials, we expect that the TEMPUR-ProAdapt should match or exceed the average lifespan of a foam mattress, which is six to seven years.

Ease of Movement

Rating: All-Foam: 2/5 | Hybrid 3/5

Our testers experienced some difficulty moving on the TEMPUR-ProAdapt, especially the all-foam models that have less bounce. The memory foam comfort layers of the TEMPUR-ProAdapt are highly contouring, which can cause a person to feel stuck in place. The pocketed coil support core of the TEMPUR-ProAdapt Hybrid provided better responsiveness during our sleep lab tests, making it a bit easier to change positions on that model.

Sex

Rating: All-Foam: 2/5 | Hybrid 3/5

When thinking about how conducive a bed will be for sex, it’s important to consider a range of performance metrics, including ease of movement, edge support, noise, and temperature control. Although the all-foam TEMPUR-ProAdapt models are quiet, their deeply contouring foam layers can stifle motion and retain heat. The hybrid version offers a better surface for sex since it has more bounce, better edge support, and a reduced tendency to overheat.

Off-Gassing

Rating: All-Foam: 2/5 | Hybrid 3/5

We use an instrument to directly measure and track off-gassing, which is the chemical smell that results when foam-based products release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) after being unboxed. Our testers noticed above-average off-gassing levels with the all-foam TEMPUR-ProAdapt models. While off-gassing is considered harmless, the odor may linger for a couple of days after unboxing the mattress.

What Is the TEMPUR-ProAdapt Mattress Made Of?

The TEMPUR-ProAdapt Mattress features two memory foam comfort layers. The support core is made with dense polyfoam in the all-foam models, while the hybrid mattress option features pocketed coils.

The firmness options are modulated by using different foam densities and variations of traditional TEMPUR foam to provide a plusher or firmer sleep surface.

  • TEMPUR-ProAdapt Soft: This model includes 5 centimeters of TEMPUR-ES foam and 5 centimeters of TEMPUR-APR foam.
  • TEMPUR-ProAdapt Medium All-Foam: This mattress has a top layer consisting of 5 centimeters of original TEMPUR foam with a second layer made with 5 centimeters of TEMPUR-APR foam.
  • TEMPUR-ProAdapt Medium Hybrid: This version has a 6-centimeter top layer of soft TEMPUR-ES foam and a supportive second layer made with 4 centimeters of TEMPUR-APR foam.
  • TEMPUR-ProAdapt Firm: This firmer model has a 3-centimeter layer of TEMPUR-APR foam on top of 5 centimeters of original TEMPUR foam.

The all-foam models contain a support core of dense polyfoam, while the hybrid model uses pocketed coils that add a slightly bouncy, responsive feel.

How Much Does the TEMPUR-ProAdapt Mattress Cost?

The TEMPUR-ProAdapt Mattress sits at the higher end of the price range for a luxury mattress. This model is not the right fit if you’re looking for a low-cost mattress. However, many people with a larger mattress budget appreciate Tempur-Pedic’s reputation and its reliably comfortable memory foam materials.

Which Tempur-Pedic Mattress Is Right for You?

Tempur-Pedic designed its mattress offerings to meet the needs of a wide range of budgets and comfort preferences. For example, the TEMPUR-Cloud comes in both all-foam and hybrid options and is more affordable than the TEMPUR-ProAdapt.

Other Tempur-Pedic models offer different materials and firmness levels. The firm versions of the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt and TEMPUR-LUXEbreeze may be better for hot sleepers, while the TEMPUR-Adapt may be a good match for people who want a medium (5) firmness level and a reduced price-point.

TEMPUR-ProAdapt Mattress FAQ

Is the TEMPUR-ProAdapt Mattress Worth the Price?

Whether or not the TEMPUR-ProAdapt Mattress is worth the price largely depends on your budget and overall comfort preferences. If you are looking for a high-end memory foam mattress that provides above-average pressure relief, and if you have the budget to invest in a luxury mattress, then the TEMPUR-ProAdapt may be worth considering.

Is the TEMPUR-ProAdapt Good for Hot Sleepers?

The TEMPUR-ProAdapt firm (7) model offers good temperature control for hot sleepers. However, other versions may retain heat, and in general, hot sleepers may find better breathability from Tempur-Pedic’s TEMPUR-PRObreeze and TEMPUR-LUXEbreeze mattresses.

Does TEMPUR Memory Foam Get Softer Over Time?

Like virtually any foam, TEMPUR memory foam can become slightly softer over time as a result of regular use. However, the amount that the material softens can depend on your body weight and whether the mattress is your primary bed or a guest bed. In most cases, any softening is minor and does not significantly impact the overall comfort and support during the bed’s typical lifespan.

Why Are Tempur-Pedic Mattresses So Popular?

Tempur-Pedic was the first company to popularize memory foam in mattress construction. Since its founding, the brand has built a reputation on its highly contouring foam comfort layers that offer noticeable pressure relief and motion isolation. In addition to the brand name, Tempur-Pedic mattresses have frequently been featured in retail mattress stores, making them highly visible and widely available across the country.
