Saatva Mattress: Our Verdict

Because there are so many options when buying a mattress, it can be challenging to find the right mattress for you. The Saatva Classic Mattress addresses this by giving you the option of customizing two critical features of the bed: height and firmness. The Saatva Classic comes in two height options and three firmness levels, allowing you to decide the best combination for your needs.

The Saatva Classic uses both memory foam and coils to provide a balance of support and pressure relief. This makes it a good fit for a wide variety of sleepers. The foam layers give the bed a supportive feel that helps you maintain good spinal alignment. The two layers of coils create a responsive sleep surface and help air circulate through the mattress for a cooler sleep.

Saatva Mattress Video Review

Watch our video review of the Saatva Classic to get a hands-on look at the bed’s construction and performance. Our product tester offers notes on pressure relief, support, and other key performance features.

Saatva Mattress: An Introduction

Founded in 2010, Saatva is a mattress and sleep accessory brand best known for using natural and organic materials. The company offers a wide range of mattresses that incorporate high-quality materials.

The Classic is an innerspring mattress with an organic cotton cover, a Euro-top quilted with polyfoam, a layer of pocketed minicoils, and a support core made of an additional layer of coils. This dual coil design gives the mattress a supportive and responsive feel.

The mattress is available in 11.5-inch and 14.5-inch profiles. There are also three firmness level options: soft (3), medium firm (6), and firm (8).

We’ll examine the Saatva Classic’s construction, pros and cons, and performance ratings. We’ll also cover price, sizing, shipping, and return policies.

How We Review

Our testing team rates each mattress according to our methodology to help you select the best bed for you. Our scores give you in-depth insight into how the mattress performs in various categories and for different sleep styles.

What’s It Like to Sleep on the Saatva Mattress?

The Saatva Classic is a responsive mattress designed to provide targeted support for your back and joints. The coils give the bed a bouncy feel that makes movement easy, while the memory foam provides enhanced pressure relief. The breathable cotton cover and dual layer of coils help circulate air for a cooler sleep.

The Saatva Classic comes in soft (3), medium firm (6), and firm (8) models. The company also offers two height options, allowing you to further personalize your bed.

While the height does not necessarily change the feel or performance of the mattress, the firmness can affect the comfort level for certain sleepers. For example, sleepers under 130 pounds may prefer the soft (3) option, while sleepers over 230 pounds are likely to be more comfortable on the firm (8) mattress.

Saatva Mattress Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Organic cotton cover and Euro-top provide a cool sleep surface
  • Memory foam and pocketed microcoils in the comfort layer offer support and bounce
  • High-density polyfoam and coils in the support core provide good edge support and air circulation

Cons

  • Dual coil construction does not isolate motion well
  • Firmness options lead to varied performance ratings – consider your sleep needs before selecting a model
  • Saatva only ships orders to the contiguous U.S.

Sleeping Positions, Body Weight, and Firmness

The Saatva Classic comes in three firmness levels, rated 3, 6, and 8 on our 10-point firmness scale. These scores represent soft, medium firm, and firm options.

When testing a mattress, our team considers factors like body size and sleep position, which can have an impact on comfort. Our testers found that the Saatva Classic’s performance varied widely based on firmness. For example, the soft (3) mattress was best suited for side sleepers under 130 pounds, while the medium firm (6) bed was a better option for side and back sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds. The firm (8) bed performed well for sleepers over 230 pounds of any sleep style.

Side Sleepers

In general, our side sleeping testers felt that the Saatva Classic was comfortable, supportive, and a good mattress for side sleepers. However, individual firmness preferences depended on their body type. Side sleepers under 130 pounds liked the soft model. Sleepers weighing 130 to 230 pounds favored the medium firm, with the firm model working best for those over 230 pounds.

Back Sleepers

Our back sleepers over 130 pounds reported that they got the best support from the medium firm and firm models. Those weighing less preferred the soft and medium firm models but said they might need an even softer mattress for ideal support.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers typically need a firmer mattress in order to get good spinal alignment and support. Our stomach sleeping testers weighing over 130 pounds favored the Saatva Classic’s medium firm and firm models. Those between 130 and 230 pounds particularly liked the medium firm. We found that the soft option didn’t work for most of our stomach sleepers, although some testers under 130 pounds did feel adequately supported.

Our Performance Ratings

We use a 5-point scale to measure mattress performance ranging from 1 to 5, with 1 meaning poor and 5 meaning excellent. When testing a mattress like the Saatva Classic, we look at a variety of important categories that can affect how well a mattress might work for you, including pressure relief, temperature neutrality, and motion isolation.

Pressure Relief

Rating: 4/5 (Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, Firm)

The Saatva Classic uses a combination of coils and foam to strike a balance between responsiveness and pressure relief. Our tests showed that all three firmness models do a good job of relieving pressure, thanks to the lumbar pad and multiple layers of coils. The combination of memory foam and coils reinforces the sleep surface, taking pressure off of your midsection and cushioning your shoulders and hips. This allows for good spinal alignment that can help prevent soreness.

Temperature Neutrality

Rating: 4/5 (Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, Firm)

We test a mattress’ temperature neutrality by measuring heat buildup on the surface and getting feedback from our testers. Based on this information, we determined that all firmness levels of the Saatva Classic excel in temperature neutrality. The organic cotton cover is breathable, helping the sleep surface remain cool. Additionally, the Saatva’s two coil layers increase airflow through the mattress, helping to dissipate heat throughout the night.

Motion Isolation

Rating: 3/5 (Plush Soft), 2/5 (Luxury Firm, Firm)

Foam beds tend to be effective at isolating motion because they absorb movement and vibrations. Innerspring mattresses, on the other hand, are generally more responsive because of the coils used in their construction. The Saatva is very responsive, thanks to its double layer of coils. This means you are more likely to feel your partner’s movements throughout the night. However, the softer model does absorb motion a bit better than the firmer options.

Edge Support

Rating: 3/5 (Plush Soft), 4/5 (Luxury Firm, Firm)

Because of its high-density foam and several coil layers, the Saatva mattress’ perimeter feels very sturdy. This means you can use more of the bed with only minimal sinkage. The firmer models provide more edge support than the softer option, but the Saatva Classic performs well in this category regardless of firmness.

Durability

Rating: 4/5 (Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, Firm)

A mattress’ lifespan comes down to a variety of factors, including the quality of the materials used to make it and how well you take care of it. Based on the Saatva Classic’s construction and its use of materials like high-density foam and robust coils, we estimate that the Saatva Classic will last slightly longer than the typical 5.5 to 6.5 years that we usually see for innersprings.

Ease of Movement

Rating: 4/5 (Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, Firm)

Ease of movement refers to how easy it is to change sleep positions and get into and out of bed. Regardless of their weight group, our testers reported that the Saatva Classic performed well in this category. Even though the mattress contains layers of foam, its inner coils provide a bouncy surface that makes it easy to move around with little to no sinkage.

Sex

Rating: 3/5 (Plush Soft), 4/5 (Luxury Firm, Firm)

A mattress ideal for sex is easy to move on and has good edge support and temperature control. The Saatva’s double coil design offers a cool and bouncy surface that facilitates easy movement and position changes without too much sinkage. However, the plush soft option has slightly less edge support, which gives couples a little less room to move.

Off-Gassing

Rating: 5/5 (Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, Firm)

Mattresses often have a mild chemical smell when you first unpack them. The smell, or off-gassing, comes from the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the foam used in the mattress’ construction. VOCs are generally considered harmless, but the smell can take a few days to dissipate. However, Saatva mattresses do not contain enough foam for VOCs to be a significant issue.

What our tester thinks
opening quote icon If you sleep with a partner and awaken easily due to movement in bed, the Saatva Classic may cause sleep disruptions. Motion isolation was limited during our tests — we noticed a fair amount of bounce on all three models. opening quote icon

Which Saatva Mattress Is Right for You?

In addition to the Classic, Saatva also offers several other mattress options. These beds range in firmness, height, price, and other features. The Saatva Classic is the only model that allows you to choose a firmness level and mattress profile.

Like the Classic, the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid comes in an 11.5-inch profile. It has a lower price-point, but it’s only available in a medium firm (6) option. The Latex Hybrid contains a thick layer of zoned natural latex in its comfort system and one layer of pocketed coils in its support core. Saatva also offers the Saatva HD, a hybrid designed to provide additional support for heavier sleepers.

The Saatva HD is an excellent option for side and back sleepers over 230 pounds, while the Saatva Latex Hybrid may work best for stomach and back sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds. The Memory Foam Hybrid is a great choice for side sleepers of any body size.
