UPDATED

Written by Garen Glazier

Expert Tested

Flippable mattresses are beds with a usable surface on each side. They are available in a range of materials and designs, including foam, hybrid, and latex models. Some have dual-firmness levels with one side that’s more plush and conforming, and another that’s firmer and more supportive.

Our team has tested numerous flippable mattresses to put together our top picks, taking into consideration a variety of body types and sleep preferences. We’ll discuss our choices and explore the different types, costs, benefits, and drawbacks.

The Sleep Doctor’s Review

The Layla Memory Foam Mattress features medium soft (4) and firm (7) sides, allowing you to choose between close contouring and sturdy support. The mattress is easy to flip due to its lightweight all-foam design, and cooling infusions on both sides help to reduce heat retention and keep you cool.

Pros

  • Excellent motion isolation
  • Removable cover
  • Zoned medium soft side for targeted support and pressure relief

Cons

  • Limited edge support on either side
  • Foam layers may hinder movement

The Layla Memory Foam Mattress is a flippable all-foam bed with medium soft (4) and firm (7) sides. This model offers exceptional pressure relief for side sleepers without the heat buildup that’s common in memory foam mattresses.

Why We Like It

The removable cover is made of a breathable polyester, rayon, viscose, and poly-lycra blend. The medium soft side has a 3-inch layer of copper gel-infused memory foam designed to improve temperature regulation and reduce microbial growth. Underneath, a 2-inch layer of zoned polyfoam adds extra support below the hips and shoulders to encourage healthy spinal alignment. The polyfoam also has grooved channels to promote airflow. Our side sleepers under 230 pounds were most comfortable on this thick comfort system.

How Does It Feel?

On the firm side, a 1-inch layer of copper gel-infused memory foam provides pressure relief without too much sinkage. Our back and stomach sleepers of all weights appreciated this added support. The thinner comfort system also prevented our side sleepers over 230 pounds from sinking too deeply into the mattress. A support core made of 4.5 inches of firm, high-density polyfoam adds durability and minimizes motion transfer. Partners who are sensitive to each other’s movements may prefer the medium soft side, although our testing showed that the firm side also effectively absorbed vibrations. Our team found it easier to move around and get in and out of bed on the firm side, but the medium soft side cradled testers’ shoulders and hips exceptionally well.

Most Comfortable Mattress

Latex For Less Mattress

Dr. Michael BreusReviewer Picture

The Sleep Doctor’s Review

The Latex for Less Mattress is a perfect choice for sleepers who like beds with contouring but don’t enjoy the deep sinkage that sometimes comes with it. The best part is the price-point, which is very reasonable for an all-latex model.

Pros

  • Latex and coils offer responsive design with gentle cushioning
  • Available in two different profiles
  • Reasonable price-point for a latex mattress

Cons

  • Not suitable for sleepers with latex allergy
  • May not feel comfortable for sleepers over 230 pounds

The Latex for Less Mattress is a flippable all-latex model that comes in different profiles and firmness levels. This range of options makes it comfortable for a wide variety of sleepers, and at a significantly lower price-point than other latex models we’ve tested.

Why We Like It

The Latex for Less Mattress excels at temperature neutrality, which we attribute to the natural cooling properties of latex. The moisture-wicking wool on both surfaces acts as a fire barrier while also maintaining a cool surface. A breathable cotton cover encases the entire bed. The latex carries certification from the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) while the wool and cotton are certified organic by the Global Organic Cotton Standard (GOTS). Sleepers who prioritize eco-friendly construction can rest assured this bed is made with sustainability in mind.

How Does It Feel?

The mattress is available in two profiles — 7 and 9 inches. Both have a reversible design with a medium (5) feel on one side and firm (7) feel on the other. The models are bouncy and responsive, due to the all-latex design, but the thicker options have an extra layer of latex that boosts overall support while enhancing contouring on the surface. Side sleepers on our team preferred the thicker models since these offer stronger pressure relief for the shoulders and hips. Back sleepers generally preferred the firm side of both profiles, while stomach sleepers under 130 pounds gave highest ratings to the medium side. Sleepers over 230 pounds, regardless of sleep position, may prefer a mattress with a better mix of support and cushioning.

Amore Beds Copper 2-Sided Mattress

Dr. Michael BreusReviewer Picture

The Sleep Doctor’s Review

The Amore Beds Copper 2-Sided Mattress is designed for a medium firm (6) feel on both surfaces, allowing you to periodically flip the mattress and preserve both sides over time. A breathable cover and cooling infusions reduce heat buildup to help you stay cool.

Pros

  • Memory foam contours evenly to improve spinal alignment and alleviate pressure
  • Chose between profiles of 8, 10, or 12 inches
  • Two cooling cover options

Cons

  • Not suitable for those seeking a flippable mattress with different feels on both sides
  • May feel too firm for side and back sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds

As you might expect, reversible mattresses cost more on average than single-sided models. The Copper 2-Sided Mattress from Amore Beds is a notable exception. With a sticker price that’s on par with the average all-foam mattress, we recommend this model if you’re shopping with a limited budget and hope to make a high-value purchase.

Why We Like It

Both sides of the mattress are designed for the same medium firm (6) feel. After testing it firsthand, our team members noted light contouring and sturdy overall support. Our side sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds and back sleepers up to 230 pounds were particularly impressed with the mattress’ balanced feel. You can choose between profiles of 8, 10, or 12 inches. Each features the same general design consisting of memory foam comfort layers, polyfoam transitional layers, and a shared support core of high-density foam. We recommend the shortest profile for children, adults with mobility limitations, and anyone else who feels more comfortable getting on and off thinner mattresses. The 10-inch and 12-inch models offer slightly more cushioning, but our testing shows a consistent medium firm feel across all three profiles.

How Does It Feel?

Two covers are available. You can opt for organic cotton, a naturally soft and breathable material that can help offset uncomfortable heat retention from the foam layers. If you’re an exceptionally hot sleeper, the copper ion cover might be a better fit. The fabric is woven with copper fibers intended to dissipate body heat on contact, resulting in a cool and comfortable surface at all times. Neither cover affects the overall price-point. During our hands-on tests, we’ve found that the Copper 2-Sided Mattress provides excellent motion isolation. The foam layers absorb movement and reduce motion transfer to a significant extent, making the mattress a good option for couples. The mattress also performed well when we tested it for pressure relief. Using body-mapping technology, we noticed minimal pressure buildup for most of the testers on our team.

Best Mattress for Back Pain

Nest Bedding Raven

Dr. Michael BreusReviewer Picture

The Sleep Doctor’s Review

The Nest Bedding Raven is a well-rounded bed that offers the signature hug of foam without excessive sinkage. The cooling design really sweetens the deal, since we’ve found some competing foam hybrids run too warm.

Great Value

Pros

  • Phase change material and airflow through coils help cool the surface
  • Foam surface gently cushions the body
  • Sturdy coils maintain support for lower back

Cons

  • Foam may initially off-gas upon unboxing
  • Might not provide sufficient cradling for sleepers who need deep pressure relief

The Nest Bedding Raven is a foam hybrid that stands out from other reversible models by incorporating phase change material into its design. Apart from this cooling feature, the mattress is notable for combining gentle cushioning with sturdy support — an ideal design for promoting healthy spinal alignment.

Why We Like It

The Raven’s cover material is infused with phase change material (PCM), which is engineered to regulate temperature and prevent overheating on the surface. This helps minimize some of the heat retention that foam is known for. Airflow through the coils also plays a big role in maintaining temperature neutrality.

How Does It Feel?

The Raven is designed with a pocketed coil support core sandwiched between foam comfort layers. The softer side has a medium (5) feel, with a memory foam layer for comfort. The firmer side has a firm (7) feel with polyfoam as its comfort layer. Both sides feature polyfoam quilted into the polyester-spandex cover. Side sleepers gravitated toward the softer side, since this group usually needs deeper cushioning for the shoulders and hips. Back and stomach sleepers will likely prefer the firm side, since these sleep positions require sturdier support. All sleepers over 230 pounds, regardless of sleep position, preferred the firm side.

Best Firm/Extra Firm

Plank Firm

Dr. Michael BreusReviewer Picture

The Sleep Doctor’s Review

A flippable design with firm (7) and extra firm (9) sides makes the Plank Firm one of the sturdiest, most supportive all-foam models our team has tested. We’ve found the mattress is especially well-suited to back and stomach sleepers weighing more than 230 pounds.

Good Value

Pros

  • Two firm surfaces
  • Optional cooling cover designed for temperature control
  • Foam design offers gentle cushioning

Cons

  • Neither side offers enough cushioning for side sleepers up to 230 pounds
  • Foam may trap some heat

The majority of mattresses sold today fall between medium soft and medium firm, or a 4 to 6 on the firmness scale. This aligns with our industry research, which has found that most people value “balance” as one of the most important mattress qualities. However, there are certainly outliers who prefer their mattresses either very soft or very firm. If you’re looking for a very firm bed, the flippable, all-foam Plank Firm should suit your needs.

Why We Like It

One side of the mattress is considered firm (7). We noticed some light contouring on this side, which comes from padding material quilted to the cover and a comfort layer of TitanFlex foam. TitanFlex has a responsive feel that makes it closer to latex than memory foam in terms of support and bounciness. The opposite side is extra firm (9), and only has the padding material.

Our testing shows certain types of sleepers feel more comfortable on exceptionally firm mattresses than others. For instance, people who weigh more than 230 pounds typically need a mattress that won’t sink too much around the midsection and interfere with even spinal alignment. Testers on our team who fall into this weight group rated both sides of the Plank Firm as either good or excellent. The same holds true for most back and stomach sleepers, who generally need less cushioning and more support than side sleepers.

How Does It Feel?

The flippable Plank Firm is ideal for anyone who has struggled to find a mattress that feels supportive enough. Both sides feel exceptionally firm, and a lightweight design allows for easy rotations. If you enjoy sleep surfaces that feel flat as a board, then the extra firm surface should do nicely. We’ve tested very few mattresses that match the even support of the Plank Firm’s extra firm side.

People who sleep hot on foam are also good matches for this mattress. A firmer feel means less sinkage and more surface airflow, as evidenced by our temperature sensor readings. If you’re someone who sleeps very hot, you can order a PCM cooling panel to be sewn onto both sides of the Plank Firm. We tested models with or without the panel and both sleep reasonably cool, but the PCM panel offers a noticeable boost.

Why You Should Trust Us

Our sleep specialists have tested many mattresses over the years, rating each according to important factors like temperature regulation, responsiveness, contouring, and edge support. To evaluate flippable models, testers of varying weights and sleeping position preferences lay on each side to determine how it performs for a wide range of people. The results can help you choose a mattress that fits your needs.

What Is a Flippable Mattress?

A flippable mattress is designed to be used on both sides. Most modern mattresses have a comfort system on just one side, which means they’re not meant to be flipped. However, you can rotate one-sided models end to end to spread out the wear more evenly. With flippable models, you can switch between two separate sleep surfaces, potentially extending the life of the mattress.

Other than their flippability, two-sided models are much like any other mattress. They consist of similar materials and contain comfort systems and support cores.

Reversible mattresses with dual-firmness levels also give sleepers the option between two distinct feels. This is often ideal for sleepers with changing needs or preferences.

Flippable mattresses aren’t as common as their one-sided counterparts, but they are available online and in stores.

What Types of Mattresses are Flippable?

Flippable models are available for most common mattress types, including innerspring, hybrid, latex, and foam

Innerspring mattresses are traditionally flippable to extend the life of the coils, but both sides usually have the same feel. Other types of reversible mattresses frequently have different firmnesses on each side. Hybrid options combine responsiveness and cradling, latex models are known for their light contouring and bounce, and all-foam beds typically excel in pressure relief and motion isolation.

While you can find flippable versions of most types of mattresses, don’t expect to run into a flippable airbed. An airbed’s support core consists of air chambers that can be filled or deflated to adjust the firmness. This electric component would make it difficult for any manufacturer to produce a flippable option. However, airbeds can provide the same versatility that many shoppers hope to find in a flippable model.

Are Flippable Mattresses Expensive?

Flippable mattresses frequently have higher price tags than one-sided models because they generally cost more to make. With two separate sleeping surfaces, they require more comfort system materials. These materials are usually more expensive than the components used in a mattress core.

Queen size flippable mattresses can cost as little as $500, but most range from $1,000 to $3,000. In contrast, most mid-range one-sided mattresses cost $500 to $1,500.

Keep in mind that the type and quality of the materials can impact the price significantly.

How Long Do Flippable Mattresses Last?

Flippable mattresses usually last longer than one-sided models because the wear is distributed more evenly. While traditional one-sided mattresses may last 7 to 10 years, flippable options can last longer.

Their lifespans depend largely on their construction and materials. For example, natural latex is extremely durable and can usually outlast a foam mattress.

A sleeper’s position and weight can also affect how quickly a mattress wears out. For the best results, follow the manufacturer’s instructions on how often to flip and rotate your mattress.

Should You Sleep on a Flippable Mattress?

Whether you should consider a flippable mattress depends on your sleep habits, preferences, and needs.

We frequently recommend dual-firmness flippable models for sleepers who value versatility. This may include sleepers with changing comfort preferences, those with physical conditions that affect their support needs, and anyone looking to accommodate guests.

However, the added cost of a reversible mattress may not be worth it if you don’t want to change firmness levels. Flippable models can also be heavy and awkward to move, often requiring two people. If you know you’re unlikely to flip your mattress, a reversible model probably isn’t the best option for you.

Flippable Mattress

Pros
Cons
  • If properly cared for, reversible mattresses can last longer than one-sided beds by preventing premature sagging and wear.
  • Dual-firmness levels offer an extra comfort option for those who need a change in support or pressure relief.
  • Flippable mattresses frequently use high-quality materials on both sides, which many sleepers find more comfortable.
  • Reversible mattresses can be heavy and difficult to flip, especially for one person.
  • To get the maximum benefits, it’s critical to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for regular rotating and flipping.
  • Flippable mattresses aren’t as widely available as one-sided models.
