Sleep Doctor’s Take: Avocado Vegan Mattress

The Avocado Vegan Mattress is a great choice for a sustainable, vegan, organic mattress. Its hybrid construction, which consists of individually wrapped coils supporting a bouncy layer of natural latex, provides good support for most back and stomach sleepers, while the pillow-top option works well for most side sleepers.

Avocado Vegan Mattress: An Introduction

Avocado is dedicated to creating products using sustainable materials and practices, and the Avocado Vegan Mattress is no exception. This mattress has a similar construction to the company’s flagship Avocado Green Mattress, except that the Vegan Mattress is made without animal products.

This mattress uses a hybrid design with a layer of individually wrapped coils and latex supporting a comfort layer of latex and organic cotton. This construction provides good responsiveness and temperature regulation for back and stomach sleepers over 130 pounds, as well as side sleepers over 230 pounds. An optional pillow-top model improves performance for side sleepers and those under 130 pounds.

We’ll discuss the Avocado Vegan Mattress’ performance during our in-house tests, its construction and materials, and which sleepers it’s best for.

How We Review

Our goal is to put to use our team’s many years of experience in testing and reviewing sleep products to help you choose the best mattress for your needs and budget. All of the mattresses we review come to our lab for tests on performance characteristics such as pressure relief, temperature regulation, and motion isolation.

What’s It Like to Sleep on the Avocado Vegan Mattress?

The Avocado Vegan Mattress has a firm and responsive feel, thanks to the use of natural Dunlop latex in the comfort layer. We found that this level of support was ideal for our testers who sleep on their back or stomach and weigh over 130 pounds. Our side sleepers over 230 pounds also appreciated the Vegan Mattress’ combination of support and light contouring.

An optional pillow-top is available and makes for a more plush and pressure-relieving feel that our side sleepers appreciated. And the good temperature regulation of this model is an added bonus for those who sleep hot.

Pros

  • Great responsiveness
  • Breathable materials help keep sleepers cool
  • Optional pillow-top provides comfort for all sleep positions
  • Uses vegan and certified organic materials

Cons

  • May not provide enough pressure relief for some sleepers without the addition of the pillow-top
  • Not as much motion isolation as a foam mattress
  • May be too heavy to lift without help

Sleeping Positions, Body Weight, and Firmness

Because different sleepers prefer different firmness levels, our ratings are determined by a testing team that includes individuals with varied body types and sleeping positions. This allows us to get a better picture of how a mattress will perform for different sleepers. For example, stomach sleepers often need a firmer mattress compared to back sleepers, while side sleepers usually prefer a softer option.

We measure firmness on a 10-point scale from extra soft (1) to extra firm (10). The Avocado Vegan Mattress rates as firm (7), but you can purchase an optional pillow-top layer that softens it to a medium firm (6). This could be a good solution for side sleepers and those under 130 pounds.

Side Sleepers

Side sleepers generally like a softer mattress that provides some sinkage and contours the hips and shoulders. Because of this, our testers who sleep on their side generally preferred the softer pillow-top model. This was particularly true for side sleepers weighing over 130 pounds.

Back Sleepers

Most of our back sleepers felt comfortable on both versions of the Avocado Vegan Mattress. However, those weighing over 130 pounds slightly preferred the standard version, while those under 130 pounds appreciated the additional pressure relief of the optional pillow-top.

Stomach Sleepers

Our stomach sleepers generally liked both models of this mattress as well, although the pillow-top was too soft for stomach sleepers over 230 pounds. The standard version worked best for stomach sleepers weighing between 130 and 230 pounds, while the pillow-top version provided the extra cushioning needed for stomach sleepers under 130 pounds.

Our Performance Ratings

The evaluators at our test lab rated the Avocado Vegan Mattress from poor (1) to excellent (5) on certain key characteristics.

Pressure Relief

Rating: 3/5 (Standard), 4/5 (Pillow-Top)

Among hybrid mattresses, those that primarily use latex in the comfort layer often have somewhat less pressure relief than those that use memory foam. This is because latex is firmer and contours less to joints. While we found that the standard model of the Avocado Vegan Mattress did provide good pressure relief, those who like additional cushioning might want to opt for the optional pillow-top.

Temperature Neutrality

Rating: 4/5

Latex tends to retain less heat than other mattress materials like foam. This means mattresses designed with latex, like the Avocado Vegan Mattress, can help hot sleepers stay cool. Additionally, we found that this mattress’ pocketed coils help improve air circulation.

Motion Isolation

Rating: 3/5

If you share a bed, you probably want a mattress with good motion isolation so that the movements on one side of the bed don’t transfer to the other and disturb your partner. The individually pocketed coils of the Avocado Vegan Mattress offer good motion isolation, but we found that the latex transfers more motion than a foam mattress.

Edge Support

Rating: 4/5

Good edge support allows you to use more of a mattress’ surface. It can also make it easier to get into and out of bed. Our testers found that the Avocado Vegan Mattress’ combination of coils and latex comfort layer of this model offer very good edge support.

Durability

Rating: 4/5

Latex tends to be extremely durable, particularly compared to other materials like memory foam and polyfoam. A latex hybrid like the Avocado Vegan Mattress can be expected to last up to about 8 years. However, there are many other factors that can affect durability, such as care and amount of use.

Ease of Movement

Rating: 5/5

Ease of movement on a bed, such as being able to easily get up or rotate to a different position, is enhanced when a mattress has a sufficient amount of  bounce. Latex is known for being responsive and less conforming than other materials. Because of this, we found that the latex comfort layer of the Avocado Vegan Mattress offered excellent ease of movement.

Sex

Rating: 5/5

A responsive bed is particularly useful for sex. The right amount of contouring is also important – too little can be uncomfortable, but too much can make movement difficult. The latex comfort layer and pocketed coils in the Avocado Vegan Mattress give it good bounce, and the latex also provides some cushioning without leading to a stuck feeling, making this a good mattress for sex.

Off-Gassing

Rating: 4/5

Mattresses often emit a “new mattress” smell when initially unboxed, particularly if they contain foam. This smell, or off-gassing, is caused by the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). VOCs are generally believed to be harmless, but the odor may be unpleasant to some. We didn’t find that the Avocado Vegan Mattress produced much off-gassing, but if this is a concern for you, be sure to set up the mattress in a well-ventilated area.

What Is the Avocado Vegan Mattress Made Of?

The Avocado Vegan Mattress is certified vegan and built with sustainability in mind. It uses organic, GOTS-certified cotton in its comfort layer instead of the wool used in the Avocado Green Mattress, and its other materials are also organic and sustainably sourced.

Beneath the cotton layer, there are 2 inches of GOLS-certified organic latex. The support core includes 1 inch of transition latex on top of an 8-inch layer of individually pocketed coils. The zoned coils are designed to provide targeted support to various parts of the body.

Avocado makes its mattresses in the U.S. and purchases carbon offsets against its manufacturing and supply chain to keep the company carbon neutral. They are also GreenGuard certified as having low chemical emissions, and the company uses graphite as a flame retardant.

How Much Does the Avocado Vegan Mattress Cost?

The Avocado Vegan Mattress has similar pricing compared to other hybrid mattresses, which makes it a good deal overall due to its high-quality materials and durability. The addition of the optional pillow-top increases the price by a nominal fee that differs depending on the size of the mattress.

Which Avocado Mattress Is Right for You?

Avocado offers several mattresses with different constructions to suit the needs of various sleep habits and body types. While the Avocado Vegan Mattress is a good fit for many, some of Avocado’s other mattresses might work better for certain sleepers.

Shoppers on a budget might consider the Avocado Eco Organic Mattress for its lower price-point but similar overall performance to the Avocado Vegan Mattress. Side sleepers and those weighing under 130 pounds may prefer a more plush mattress, such as the Avocado Organic Luxury Mattress. And stomach sleepers over 230 pounds might want to try the firm all-latex construction of the Avocado Latex Mattress.

Avocado Vegan Mattress FAQ

How Is the Avocado Vegan Mattress Different From The Avocado Green Mattress?

The Avocado Green Mattress, Avocado’s baseline model, is similar in its construction and performance to the Avocado Vegan Mattress except that it uses wool batting rather than cotton. This means that the Avocado Green isn’t vegan.

What Are the Benefits of a Vegan Mattress?

The main benefit of a vegan mattress is that it limits the use of animal-derived materials. The Avocado Vegan Mattress does this by replacing the wool batting used in the original Avocado Mattress with certified organic cotton.

Should You Get the Avocado Vegan Mattress With a Pillow-Top?

The optional pillow-top for the Avocado Vegan Mattress is a great choice for sleepers who want a more plush option. This could include sleepers who need extra pressure relief, side sleepers, and those who weigh under 130 pounds.

Where Is the Avocado Vegan Mattress Made?

Avocado mattresses are manufactured at a facility in Los Angeles, California. The company website also provides extensive information about the origins of the materials it uses in its products, such as cotton and latex.
