Zenhaven Mattress: Our Verdict

Saatva’s Zenhaven is a flippable latex mattress made from natural and organic materials. Organic cotton and wool in the cover and comfort system cushion pressure points, while zoned Dunlop latex delivers additional lumbar support. A sturdy latex core gives the mattress bounce and stability.

The reversible mattress has two distinct firmness levels: firm and medium soft, which Saatva refers to as Gentle Firm and Luxury Plush. A dual-sided model adapts to varying firmness needs, like during pregnancy or when transitioning to a new sleep position. Flipping the mattress also increases its lifespan.

Our testing team found the Zenhaven’s versatile and durable design suited a range of body types and sleep styles. Competitively priced among luxury latex models, Zenhaven purchases include free White Glove delivery and old mattress removal.

Zenhaven Mattress: An Introduction

Saatva launched the Zenhaven Mattress, a dual-sided latex model, in 2016. The eco-conscious brand makes luxury mattresses ranging from hybrids to airbeds. Each model consists of natural and organic materials.

The Zenhaven combines multiple layers of natural Dunlop latex with organic cotton and wool. All layers amount to 10 inches. The flippable design offers two distinct firmness levels. The medium soft (4) side is designed for side sleepers, particularly those under 130 pounds. The firm (7) side is better suited to individuals over 130 pounds, especially those who sleep on their back or stomach.

We’ll cover the Zenhaven’s materials, construction, and performance ratings so you can determine if the mattress is the right mattress for you. We’ll also discuss sizing, company policies, and where you can purchase the mattress.

How We Review

We apply a testing methodology that evaluates mattresses on a wide range of performance factors. Physical testing and innovative tools like body mapping give us insight into edge support, pressure relief, off-gassing, and other important features. Our testers include people with diverse body types and sleep position preferences so we can best determine how different sleep styles will respond to each mattress.

What’s It Like to Sleep on the Zenhaven Mattress?

Both sides of the Zenhaven offer a responsive feel with moderate contouring. The firm surface offers more pushback, while the medium soft side is more conforming. How each side feels and performs ultimately depends on your weight and sleep style.

The Zenhaven is a good option for sleepers who enjoy a contouring surface but dislike the close hug of memory foam. Naturally breathable materials like cotton, wool, and latex in the construction also make the mattress suitable for those who tend to sleep hot.

Zenhaven Mattress Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Two firmness levels accommodate changing preferences
  • Naturally breathable materials minimize heat buildup
  • Sturdy Dunlop latex resists sagging and impressions

Cons

  • Motion transfer is more noticeable on the firm side
  • Heavier than comparable mattresses
  • Sleepers over 230 pounds may experience sagging on the softer side

Sleeping Positions, Body Weight, and Firmness

We evaluate mattress firmness according to a 10-point scale, with 1 being extremely soft and 10 being very firm. Most mattresses made today fall between soft (3) and firm (8). How firm or soft a mattress feels depends on your body size and preferred sleep position. For example, a mattress that feels firm for someone under 130 pounds may not offer enough support for heavier individuals.

The Zenhaven’s medium soft side is intended for people under 130 pounds and side sleepers who prefer extra cushioning. The firm side is designed to support stomach and back sleepers as well as side sleepers over 130 pounds. A dual-sided mattress like the Zenhaven allows sleepers to determine the best firmness for their needs.

Side Sleepers

Side sleepers under 130 pounds rated the medium soft side highly and found it provided moderate contouring while relieving pressure points. We found that both sides appealed to side sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds. Side sleepers above 230 pounds found they experienced too much sinkage to feel supported on the medium soft side.

The firm side, however, performed well for side sleepers over 230 pounds. They found the firm surface offered light contouring and exceptional support. The inverse was true for our side sleepers under 130 pounds. They found the firm side a little too rigid, but the softer side eased pressure points on the hips and shoulders.

Side sleepers who prefer a deeper body hug may want to consider Saatva’s Memory Foam Hybrid, which features a plusher comfort system.

Back Sleepers

Back sleepers on our testing team across all weight groups were comfortable on the firm side. The cover and zoned latex supported the lumbar region while cushioning the upper body and legs.

The medium soft side received mixed reviews from our back sleepers. Testers under 130 pounds experienced a balance of contouring and support. The softer surface compressed too much for back sleepers over 130 pounds, straining the lower back and spine. Back sleepers in this weight category found the firm side offered more support. Average-weight sleepers in particular found the firm side provided a firm and supportive surface.

Stomach Sleepers

Our stomach sleepers under 130 pounds gave the medium soft side average ratings. Stomach sleepers over 130 pounds found the softer surface yielded too much, causing the spine to curve excessively.

The firm surface provided moderate contouring and excellent support for average-weight stomach sleepers, helping to keep their hips and shoulders on an even plane. Stomach sleepers under 130 pounds and those over 230 pounds gave the firm side average marks. Read more: Best Mattresses for Heavy Stomach Sleepers.

Our Performance Ratings

We use a five-point scale when evaluating mattress performance, with 1 being poor and  5 being excellent.

Pressure Relief

Rating: 4/5 (Medium Soft), 3/5 (Firm)

Zoned Dunlop latex alleviates tension by promoting proper spine alignment. The quilted cover is also zoned to cushion the lower back, and a wool comfort layer helps prevent pressure points.

With its closer contour, our testers noticed the medium soft side offered more pressure relief. The firm side was too rigid for our side sleepers under 130 pounds.

Temperature Neutrality

Rating: 4/5

The cotton cover and wool fire barrier help regulate surface temperature by wicking away heat and moisture. Latex is naturally breathable, but the Zenhaven incorporates pincore holes in the latex that are designed to further enhance airflow. Since Dunlop latex is denser than Talalay latex, it doesn’t provide a deep body hug. Our testers found this helped prevent heat buildup.

Motion Isolation

Rating: 3/5 (Medium Soft, 2/5 (Firm)

Dunlop latex is very responsive, so our testers noticed some motion transfer on the Zenhaven. While disturbances were minimal during our partner tests, some sleepers may notice when their partner moves in bed, especially on the firmer and more responsive side. With a more conforming feel, the medium soft side absorbs more motion.

Edge Support

Rating: 3/5 (Medium Soft, 4/5 (Firm)

The density of Dunlop latex helps minimize deep sinkage along the edges. Most of our testers felt fully supported when sleeping or sitting on the sides of the bed. The firm surface has somewhat sturdier edge support since it compresses very little under the weight of sleepers. Co-sleepers and people over 230 pounds may experience more sagging on the medium soft side’s perimeter, especially as the mattress ages.

Durability

Rating: 4/5

Dunlop latex tends to resist premature sagging more than most types of foam. Our testers estimate that the Zenhaven should perform optimally for about seven to eight years, which is typical of a high-quality latex mattress. Periodically flipping the mattress should also increase its lifespan by promoting even wear.

Ease of Movement

Rating: 4/5

Our testers found it easy to adjust positions on both sides of the Zenhaven. Responsive Dunlop latex keeps sleepers on top of the mattress, so movement doesn’t feel restricted. Our combination sleepers in particular appreciated the mattress’ ease of movement.

Sex

Rating: 3/5 (Medium Soft), 4/5 (Firm)

The mattress’ responsive surface can be beneficial during sex. Sturdy Dunlop latex makes it easy to switch positions, and above-average temperature control helps prevent overheating. Couples may also appreciate the Zenhaven’s edge support, as it allows full use of the mattress’ surface.

Couples who favor extra bounce may prefer the firm side’s minimal contouring. Those who appreciate more cushioning during sex can opt for the medium soft side.

Off-Gassing

Rating: 4/5

The mattress doesn’t contain petroleum-based foams, chemical adhesives, or fiberglass flame retardants that off-gassing odors can stem from. Owners might notice a slight rubber smell when the mattress is new, but it should dissipate within a few hours of being unboxed.

What Is the Zenhaven Mattress Made Of?

The Zenhaven Mattress has a soft and breathable organic cotton cover certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). Zoned quilting delivers extra support to the lower back. The cover is treated with Guardin, a proprietary antimicrobial treatment.

GOTS-certified organic New Zealand wool doubles as a comfort layer and nontoxic fire barrier. Wool is allergen-resistant and naturally disperses heat and wicks away moisture. Comfort layers of natural Dunlop latex on each side of the mattress are arranged in five zones to promote spinal alignment. Tiny holes in the latex are designed to increase airflow.

The Dunlop latex comfort layer on the firm (7) side has an indentation load deflection (ILD) of 20 to 24. This makes the firm surface extra responsive. The latex on the medium soft (4) side has an ILD of 14 to 19, so it’s more conforming.

The shared support core uses two layers of Dunlop latex. The layer closer to the firm surface is firmer than the one near the medium soft side.

All of the latex undergoes a treatment to remove the proteins that typically trigger allergies. The mattress is eco-INSTITUT and GREENGUARD Gold certified, showing it meets strict guidelines for low emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). A Rainforest Alliance certification indicates that the latex was responsibly produced without harmful chemicals.

How Much Does the Zenhaven Mattress Cost?

Latex models typically command higher price-points since latex is more expensive to manufacture. Most latex mattresses cost between $1,500 and $3,000.

The Zenhaven is competitively priced for a luxury all-latex mattress. Two firmness levels, free White Glove delivery, and a generous sleep trial contribute to the overall value of the mattress.

Which Latex Mattress Is Right for You?

Latex mattresses are valued for their responsiveness, durability, and temperature control. Workmanship and material quality, however, vary based on the model. The feel and performance of a latex mattress also depends on the type of latex used. For example, Talalay latex tends to have a more cushioning feel, while Dunlop is generally firmer and denser.

There are several sustainable latex mattresses on the market. Eco-conscious shoppers wanting a latex model might also consider the Avocado Latex Mattress, a firm design geared toward stomach and back sleepers. Sleepers may also appreciate the PlushBeds Botanical Bliss, a breathable mattress made from natural Talalay and Dunlop latex. The model comes in three heights and two firmness levels.

Latex hybrids are also a good option for sleepers who prefer a firm yet responsive feel. All-latex models tend to carry a higher price-point than other designs, but their durability provides long-lasting support.

Saatva offers a range of mattress types, including innerspring, hybrid, memory foam, and airbed models. If you want a latex model but not necessarily a flippable design, you might consider the Saatva Latex Hybrid. The mattress combines springy Talalay latex and pocketed coils for a balanced medium firm (6) feel.

Sleepers who enjoy extra cushioning may want to explore the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid or the Loom & Leaf Mattress. Both models utilize memory foam for notable pressure relief.

Zenhaven Mattress FAQ

Is the Zenhaven Mattress organic?

The mattress uses GOTS-certified organic cotton and wool, but the Zenhaven isn’t a certified organic mattress. A Rainforest Alliance certification indicates that the latex was sustainably produced without chemicals. The mattress does not incorporate petroleum-based foams.

Are latex mattresses better than memory foam?

Latex and memory foam are popular materials in the bedding industry. Each has its pros and cons. Latex is typically more durable and breathable than memory foam. It generally has a springy feel with moderate contouring. Memory foam has a deeper body hug but tends to retain heat. The best option for you depends on your sleep style and preferences.

Do latex mattresses get softer over time?

Latex is an exceptionally durable material that holds up well to weight and pressure. That said, all mattresses eventually soften over time. Latex mattresses generally resist deep impressions and sagging better than memory foam and polyfoam. A typical latex mattress has a lifespan of seven to eight years.

What are the cons of a dual-sided mattress?

Dual-sided mattresses are generally more expensive than one-sided models because they require more labor and materials. Some can be quite heavy, making them challenging to flip. Dual-sided mattresses aren’t as common, so shoppers don’t have as many options to choose from.

Who makes the Zenhaven Mattress?

The Zenhaven is made by Saatva, a direct-to-consumer mattress and bedding company founded in 2010.
