Sleep Doctor’s Take: Plank Luxe Hybrid Mattress
The flippable Plank Luxe Hybrid features firm (7) and extra firm (9) sleep surfaces that are ideal for people seeking a sturdy feel and solid edge support. Our testing team found that the Plank Luxe Hybrid is an excellent match for stomach sleepers, especially those over 130 pounds.
Plank Luxe Hybrid Mattress: An Introduction
Plank is a line of firmer mattresses manufactured by Arizona-based Brooklyn Bedding. In addition to the Plank Luxe Hybrid, the company produces the reversible all-foam Plank Firm and the Plank Firm Natural, a latex hybrid.
The Plank Luxe Hybrid features a coil-based support core that promotes ventilation and responsiveness. On each side of the coils are thin comfort systems made of foam and quilted fabric. Both sides have notable firmness, so this mattress is intended for people who prefer a harder sleep surface.
We’ll cover how each side of the Plank Luxe Hybrid performed in our testing lab and who this mattress works best for. We’ll also lay out the details about how much the mattress costs, where you can buy it, and the company’s policies for returns and warranty protections.
How We Review
Our team uses a unique mattress testing methodology across a range of performance categories to give you an in-depth look at each product. We have an in-house mattress testing lab where we use technology to measure objective elements of performance while also getting the perspectives of testers who have different body weights and sleeping positions. Throughout our process, we focus on the features that matter most when determining comfort, support, and overall quality.
What’s It Like to Sleep on the Plank Luxe Hybrid?
The Plank Luxe Hybrid is a flippable mattress that offers the responsive feel expected from a hybrid mattress. With a firm (7) side and an extra firm (9) side, the bed is a good option for sleepers seeking a harder mattress for additional support. Even though there are layers of foam in the Plank Luxe Hybrid, there’s nothing plush about its overall feel.
Pocketed coils and breathable polyfoam create a cool, springy sleep surface with solid edge support. The mattress is a great fit for stomach sleepers, particularly those over 130 pounds.
Plank Luxe Hybrid Pros and Cons
Pros
- Coil-based core provides sturdy support for sleepers over 230 pounds
- Available in a variety of specialty sizes
- Breathable materials promote temperature neutrality and cooler sleep
Cons
- Firm and extra firm sides offer very little contouring or pressure relief
- Limited motion isolation makes it a poor choice for light sleepers who share a bed
- Harder surface may not be comfortable for many sleepers
Sleeping Positions, Body Weight, and Firmness
Our testing team uses a 10-point scale to rank mattress firmness levels, with 1 being softest and 10 being the firmest. Some firmness levels may be more comfortable for people in certain weight categories or those who sleep in a particular position. Our testing team includes people with a variety of body types and preferred sleeping positions so that we can provide more accurate and complete information.
We found that the Plank Luxe Hybrid’s firm side was a 7, with a touch of softness and light support. The mattress’ extra firm side is a 9, offering a great deal of sturdiness with very little contouring or cushioning.
Plank Luxe Hybrid – Firm Side
Firmness: Firm (7)
Under 130 lbs. | 130-230 lbs. | Over 230 lbs. | |
---|---|---|---|
Side Sleepers | 2/5 | 2/5 | 3/5 |
Back Sleepers | 2/5 | 3/5 | 5/5 |
Stomach Sleepers | 3/5 | 5/5 | 5/5 |
Plank Luxe Hybrid – Extra Firm Side
Firmness: Extra Firm (9)
Under 130 lbs. | 130-230 lbs. | Over 230 lbs. | |
---|---|---|---|
Side Sleepers | 1/5 | 2/5 | 2/5 |
Back Sleepers | 2/5 | 3/5 | 4/5 |
Stomach Sleepers | 2/5 | 3/5 | 5/5 |
Side Sleepers
The side sleepers on our testing team generally found the Plank Luxe Hybrid to be too firm, regardless of which side of the mattress they slept on. Side sleepers usually need plenty of contouring to relieve pressure at the shoulders and hips. Because of its limited cushioning, the Plank Luxe Hybrid struggled to reduce impact at these pressure points. However, a few people over 230 pounds felt fine sleeping on the firm (7) side.
Back Sleepers
During our tests, the Plank Luxe Hybrid performed best for back sleepers over 230 pounds, who found it gave enough support without allowing them to sink into the bed. For back sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds, both sides provided a good sleeping experience. Neither side was able to offer proper comfort and support to our back sleepers who weigh under 130 pounds.
Stomach Sleepers
A firm sleep surface is ideal for most stomach sleepers, especially those over 230 pounds, so the Plank Luxe Hybrid scored well with our testers in this group. Testers under 130 pounds were less enthusiastic about the extra firm (9) option, which they found to be too hard.
Our Performance Ratings
Our testing team personally tries out every mattress we review and rates important features according to a five-point scale, with 1 being poor and 5 being excellent.
Pressure Relief
Rating: 2/5 (Firm), 1/5 (Extra Firm)
Firmer mattresses like the Plank Luxe Hybrid tend to provide limited cradling around joints and pressure points. Unsurprisingly, we found that both sides of the Plank Luxe offered little to no pressure relief. While the firm side offers very light cushioning, the extra firm side has virtually no ability to contour to the body or minimize pressure.
Temperature Neutrality
Rating: 4/5 (Base Model), 5/5 (With Cooling Cover)
Our testers found that the Plank Luxe Hybrid sleeps quite cool since the body doesn’t sink too deeply into its surface and the coil-based support core provides ample ventilation. Shoppers can add an optional GlacioTex cooling cover, which is infused with fibers that are engineered to feel cool on contact. In our evaluation, the add-on further enhanced the mattress’ temperature neutrality, making this option an excellent fit for hot sleepers.
Motion Isolation
Rating: 2/5 (Firm), 1/5 (Extra Firm)
During our testing, the Plank Luxe’s extra firm side, which lacks a thick comfort system, absorbed very little motion. The firm surface performed only slightly better. On either side, it’s normal to notice a bed partner moving on the other side of the mattress. Foam beds with contouring comfort layers typically isolate motion more effectively and are a better fit than the Plank Luxe Hybrid for most couples and light sleepers who share their bed with a partner or pet.
Edge Support
Rating: 4/5 (Firm), 5/5 (Extra Firm)
The Plank Luxe features strong edge support on both the firm and extra firm sides. The perimeter on the extra firm side has almost no give, making it extremely sturdy. This solid edge support makes it easier to use the entire surface of the mattress and facilitates getting in and out of bed. Having dependable support around the perimeter is also important for people who regularly sit near the edge of their mattress.
Durability
Rating: 3/5 (Firm), 3/5 (Extra Firm)
Our analysis rates the durability of the Plank Luxe Hybrid as about average. While foam can break down over years of use, firmer foam is often more durable. Steel coils in the support core also contribute to a longer expected lifespan for this mattress. What may detract from its durability, however, is its relatively thin comfort layers. With less material on either side, the mattress may be more susceptible to showing signs of wear and tear, especially for people who put more stress on their mattress.
Ease of Movement
Rating: 4/5 (Firm), 5/5 (Extra Firm)
The Plank Luxe Hybrid showed significant responsiveness in our testing, allowing our testers to move about freely on the mattress. The extra firm side did particularly well in this category, receiving an excellent rating. The mattress facilitates this movement largely as a result of its firm foams and robust coil system that work together to limit sinkage. With this design, the sleepers on our testing team never felt that they were stuck in the mattress, which marks a sharp contrast with many other mattresses that are softer or made of materials like memory foam.
Sex
Rating: 5/5 (Firm), 4/5 (Extra Firm)
A mattress that’s good for sex generally has solid edge support, maintains a cool temperature, and allows couples to move and reposition on the mattress surface with ease. The Plank Luxe Hybrid has all of those attributes, and the firm side especially stands out because it has just enough cushioning to offer added comfort during sex.
Off-Gassing
Rating: 3/5 (Firm), 3/5 (Extra Firm)
Off-gassing refers to the chemical smell that’s sometimes released when you unbox a mattress. A byproduct of foam production, the odor is considered harmless and usually goes away after a few hours. However, off-gassing can be unpleasant for many people. Our team noticed some slight off-gassing from the Plank Luxe, but it was about average for mattress-in-a-box models.
What Is the Plank Luxe Hybrid Mattress Made Of?
Both sides of the Plank Luxe Hybrid Mattress have a quilted top layer, which is thicker on the firm side. Underneath, the firm side’s comfort layer consists of 1 inch of TitanFlex polyfoam on top of a high-density polyfoam layer. In contrast, the extra firm side only has a quilted top layer and 2 inches of high-density polyfoam in its comfort system.
The support core in the center of the mattress’ layered construction is made with 6 inches of pocketed coils that contribute bounce and stability to both sides of the mattress.
The standard cover on the Plank Luxe Hybrid is made of the same fabric that is used to add quilted padding on both sides. For an additional cost, customers can choose to have a GlacioTex cooling cover sewn onto each side of the mattress. The cover’s fabric is infused with specialty fibers that are designed to help cool the skin on contact.

How Much Does the Plank Luxe Hybrid Cost?
Hybrid mattresses tend to be more expensive than all-foam or innerspring models, but the Plank Luxe Hybrid is affordably priced compared with other beds in its category.
The mattress is available in several specialty sizes, which could make it especially appealing for individuals seeking a mattress to fit a space with unusual dimensions. Customers can also opt for the GlacioTex cooling cover, with larger sizes increasing the cost for this add-on.

Which Plank Mattress Is Right for You?
The Plank Firm is the brand’s all-foam model, meaning it lacks a coil-based support core. As a result, it provides slightly more contouring than the Plank Luxe Hybrid, although both mattresses feature firm (7) and extra firm (9) sides and should appeal to stomach sleepers who weigh more than 130 pounds and back sleepers over 230 pounds.
In addition to the difference in construction, the Plank Luxe Hybrid and Plank Firm are also distinct in their height and pricing. The Luxe Hybrid is 1.5 inches taller than the Plank Firm and it has a slightly higher price-point as well.
While neither bed ranked highly in our testing with side sleepers and people who weigh less than 130 pounds, these sleepers may be more comfortable on the Brooklyn Bedding Spartan, which comes in medium soft (4), medium firm (6), and firm (7) options.

Plank Luxe Hybrid Mattress FAQ
The Plank Luxe Hybrid Mattress supports up to 950 pounds, so it is a viable option for many sleepers and couples.
This mattress may be too hard for some sleepers, especially people who weigh under 130 pounds and those who sleep on their side. However, people who weigh more than 230 pounds or sleep on their back or stomach may be more comfortable on the Plank Luxe Hybrid Mattress.
A flippable mattress gives you another option if you find one side to be too hard or too soft. The ability to just turn the mattress over and have a different firmness level can facilitate better comfort and support to match the needs of sleepers. While this offers flexibility in any situation, a reversible mattress works especially well in guest rooms.
Brooklyn Bedding produces the Plank brand, which includes the Plank Firm, Plank Firm Natural, and Plank Luxe Hybrid. Brooklyn Bedding also has multiple other mattress product lines, including EcoSleep, Titan, and Spartan.
The Plank Luxe Hybrid Mattress is made at Brooklyn Bedding’s factory in Phoenix, Arizona.
