Sleep Doctor’s Take: Leesa Hybrid Mattress

The Leesa Original Hybrid has a layer of plush memory foam on top of a support core constructed of pocketed coils. Balancing the traditional bounce of an innerspring with the contouring of memory foam, the Original Hybrid offers exceptional performance for side sleepers and combination sleepers under 230 pounds.

Leesa Hybrid Mattress: An Introduction

Balancing cushioning and stability, the Leesa Original Hybrid Mattress supports the body while staying comfortable and cool for most body weights and sleep positions. The pocketed coils provide a subtle bounce, while the reinforced edges make it easy to get in and out of bed.

Leesa is a U.S.-based mattress retailer that offers six mattress models and several collections of bedding and mattress support systems. The Original Hybrid is a hybrid version of the company’s flagship all-foam Leesa Original.

How We Review

We reviewed the Leesa Original Hybrid Mattress in our dedicated sleep lab using our rigorous product testing methodology. To review the bed’s performance, our diverse team of side, back, and stomach sleepers conducted hands-on testing and evaluated this mattress across performance categories like pressure relief, durability, and temperature regulation.

What’s It Like to Sleep on the Leesa Hybrid Mattress?

The Leesa Original Hybrid Mattress’ top layer of memory foam gently conforms to the body, effectively preventing pressure from building up in areas like the shoulders and hips. The 8-inch layer of pocketed coils gives the bed a slight bounce, making it easy to change position. We also noted its solid perimeter, which made it easy to sit on the edge of the mattress and get out of bed.

In terms of performance, the Original Hybrid performed particularly well in temperature regulation and ease of movement, staying nearly silent even as our testers moved across its surface. These features make this mattress a great option for shoppers looking for the right mattress for sex. It’s also a great choice for combination sleepers and couples.

Sleeping Positions, Body Weight, and Firmness

Our team rated the Leesa Original Hybrid as a medium firm (6) mattress. We use a 10-point scale to measure how firm a mattress feels, with one indicating an extra soft bed and 10 representing an extra firm bed. Most mattresses are between medium (5) and medium firm (6).

To ensure our ratings are inclusive, our sleep testers encompass a wide range of body types and a mix of preferred sleep positions, including side, back, stomach, and combination sleepers.

When choosing a mattress, it’s important to consider your preferences as well as your body weight and usual sleep position. Side sleepers often prefer a softer surface that cushions the shoulders and hips while still providing enough support to maintain spinal alignment. Back sleepers often benefit from a firmer mattress that distributes weight evenly and doesn’t sink under the lower back. Stomach sleepers usually need a firmer model that keeps the torso supported.

Leesa Hybrid Mattress Ratings

Under 130 lbs.130-230 lbs.Over 230 lbs.
Side Sleepers3/55/55/5
Back Sleepers5/54/53/5
Stomach Sleepers5/53/52/5

Side Sleepers

Side sleepers generally need a mattress that is soft enough to prevent pressure points from forming at the shoulders and hips while also preventing too much sinkage. Our side sleepers weighing over 130 pounds found that the Original Hybrid did an excellent job of providing this balance. Side sleepers on our team who weigh less also found the bed comfortable, rating it as about average for a hybrid.

Back Sleepers

Back sleepers need ample cushioning for pressure points, along with sturdy support to prevent misalignment. Back sleepers on our team who weigh less than 230 pounds appreciated the mattress’ mix of comfort and support. Back sleepers over 230 pounds still appreciated the strong support core but would have preferred a firmer sleep surface with less contouring.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers need a mattress that provides enough support under the midsection to prevent spinal misalignment. Our testers under 130 pounds rated the Hybrid Original as excellent in this area, but those over 230 pounds felt they sank too deeply into the bed’s surface.

Our Performance Ratings

The performance of each mattress is evaluated by our team across several categories. Our rating system ranges from 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest and 1 being the lowest.

Pressure Relief

Rating: 4/5

The Leesa Original Hybrid’s combination of springy coils and contouring foam provided above-average pressure relief for the majority of testers on our team. By contouring to the body’s natural curves, the Original Hybrid supports spinal alignment and relieves pressure that can build up in certain sleeping positions.

Temperature Neutrality

Rating: 4/5

Hybrids typically perform well in terms of temperature neutrality, thanks to their coil core, which allows air to circulate freely. The Original Hybrid is no exception – in fact, it surpassed our expectations. Our team found that the bed’s knit cover, breathable foam layers, and pocketed coil support core helped the Original Hybrid mattress sleep cooler than other hybrids.

Motion Isolation

Rating: 3/5

While the Leesa Original Hybrid Mattress features foam layers that promote motion isolation, our testers could still feel some slight movement during our tests. This is due to the coil support core, which provides an active response to body movement. Although the Original Hybrid is on par with other hybrids in this area, particularly sensitive sleepers may prefer an all-foam mattress that isolates motion a little better.

Edge Support

Rating: 4/5

The Leesa Original Hybrid Mattress has two rows of thick, low-gauge springs around the perimeter, which keep the mattress edges sturdy and supportive. We found that the sturdy edge support prevented sinkage and made it easy for our testers to get in and out of the bed.

Durability

Rating: 3/5

Like many hybrids, the Leesa Original Hybrid Mattress has an expected lifespan of about seven to eight years, which is slightly longer than the all-foam Leesa Original. The high-quality construction and materials used in the Leesa Original Hybrid may extend its lifespan beyond this average, but individual usage and wear and tear can make a big difference.

Ease of Movement

Rating: 4/5

Although the top memory foam layer contours gently to the body, the responsive surface springs within the support core allow sleepers to move around on the Original Hybrid with relative ease. Our testers found it easy to change position and move across the bed’s surface, indicating that this mattress could be a good fit for active and combination sleepers.

Sex

Rating: 4/5

The Leesa Original Hybrid Mattress is a great option for sex. Its pocketed coils provide ample responsiveness and a slight bounce that make it easy to move on the mattress’ surface. The support core is insulated by a dense foam base and two layers of foam, both of which help to minimize the noise often associated with traditional innerspring mattresses.

Off-Gassing

Rating: 3/5

Off-gassing refers to the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from certain mattresses once they are unboxed. VOCs are generally considered harmless, but the smell may be unpleasant to some. The Leesa Original Hybrid does produce some off-gassing after it’s unsealed from its plastic wrap. However, the odor dissipates fairly quickly.

What Is the Leesa Hybrid Mattress Made Of?

The Leesa Original Hybrid Mattress is constructed of memory foam, pocketed coils, and polyfoam. The comfort system includes a 1-inch layer of memory foam set above a 1.5-inch layer of supportive polyfoam. The support core consists of an 8-inch layer of pocketed coils with two rows of low-gauge springs around the perimeter for increased edge support. The final layer is .75 inches of dense polyfoam, which gives the mattress structure and reinforces the support core.

The Leesa Original Hybrid Mattress contains CertiPUR-US certified memory foam and polyfoam, meaning these materials are made without ozone depletors and certain harmful chemicals.

How Much Does the Leesa Hybrid Mattress Cost?

The Leesa Original Hybrid is a mid-range hybrid mattress with a lower price tag than many comparable models. Due to the combination of pocketed coils and different types of foam, hybrids typically cost between $1,000 and $3,000.

Which Leesa Mattress Is Right for You?

Leesa offers multiple types of mattresses, including their all-foam Original, three hybrid models, and a collection of mattresses designed for kids. Choosing the right Leesa mattress depends on your individual sleep needs and preferences.

During testing, our team found that the Leesa Original Hybrid and the Leesa Sapira Hybrid worked better than other models for stomach and back sleepers under 130 pounds, as well as for side sleepers over 130 pounds. All of Leesa’s hybrid models excelled in edge support and ease of movement.

The Leesa Original Mattress performed best for side sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds. The medium soft (6) feel of the Leesa Studio was also exceptionally comfortable for our testers under 130 pounds. However, considering that all of Leesa’s models have a firmness level of 6 or lower, sleepers over 230 pounds may prefer a firmer model from another brand.
