Sleep Doctor’s Take: Emma Mattress
The Emma Original Mattress includes two layers of conforming memory foam that excel at pressure relief and motion isolation. The dense polyfoam core provides just enough structure to support the shoulders and hips, making this mattress a standout choice for the side sleepers on our testing team.
Emma Mattress: An Introduction
Founded in 2015, Emma is an international bedding brand with a small collection of mattresses and a range of mattress bases, pillows, and mattress protectors. In the U.S., the company currently sells the flagship all-foam Emma Original and the CliMax Hybrid Mattress, a slightly firmer hybrid with added pocketed coils. A newer addition to its lineup is the Emma Shift Mattress, an adjustable airbed with dials that control the firmness level on each side of the bed.
The Emma Original Mattress remains the company’s most popular model. It has a medium (5) firmness level and features two top layers of memory foam and a zoned polyfoam support core. Like the CliMax Hybrid, the Original includes a machine-washable cover.
Our team tested the Emma Original, considering everything from the mattress’ construction to its cost and how it performed in our sleep lab. We’ll dive into our findings about what it’s like to sleep on the Emma Original Mattress, and whether it’s the best mattress for you needs.
How We Review
We have a team of sleep experts who evaluate mattresses based on our thorough testing methodology and provide feedback on a broad range of performance categories. Since findings are unique to a sleeper’s preferences, we have a dynamic team with a variety of preferred sleep positions and a wide range of body types.
What’s It Like to Sleep on the Emma Mattress?
The first thing our team noticed when lying on the Emma Original Mattress is the dual layers of memory foam, which give the close body hug that the best memory foam mattresses are known for. We found it offers impressive pressure relief and motion isolation, lending itself well to our side sleepers and those sharing a bed.
Emma Mattress Pros and Cons
Pros
- Excellent combination of support and cushioning for side sleepers
- Motion isolation limits disruptions from a partner, pet, or child on the bed
- Extended 365-night sleep trial
Cons
- Memory foam may be too soft for some back or stomach sleepers
- People over 230 pounds may not feel as supported
- Average temperature regulation may not be sufficient for those who sleep hot
Sleeping Positions, Body Weight, and Firmness
The Emma Original Mattress is rated as a 5 on our team’s 10-point firmness scale. This means the mattress has a medium feel that conforms fairly closely to the body. While a sleeper will settle gently into its plush surface, the Emma Original doesn’t sink excessively. During our testing, side sleepers found the mattress exceptionally comfortable, with the right balance of softness and structure.
When choosing a mattress, people who weigh less than 130 pounds and those who sleep on their side tend to prefer a softer mattress, while people with higher body weights or who sleep on their stomach or back typically prefer a model with more support.
Emma Mattress Sleeper Ratings
Under 130 lbs. | 130-230 lbs. | Over 230 lbs. | |
---|---|---|---|
Side Sleepers | 5/5 | 5/5 | 4/5 |
Back Sleepers | 3/5 | 3/5 | 2/5 |
Stomach Sleepers | 3/5 | 3/5 | 2/5 |
Side Sleepers
Our side sleepers were impressed by the Emma Original’s balance of softness and support. The conforming memory foam layers allowed their hips and shoulders to sink into the bed’s surface, while the dense polyfoam support core maintained enough structure to keep their spines in alignment.
Back Sleepers
Back sleepers weighing under 230 pounds noted that this mattress is just firm enough to prevent discomfort in the lower back. However, most of our back sleepers preferred the increased firmness found in the Emma CliMax Hybrid.
Stomach Sleepers
When testing the Emma Original, the stomach sleepers on our team felt about the same as our back sleepers. Stomach sleepers need a firm enough mattress to prevent their midsection from sinking too far and affecting alignment. While our stomach sleepers below 230 pounds found the Emma Original moderately comfortable, those over 230 pounds said they prefer a firmer mattress.
Our Performance Ratings
During our testing process, we assess mattresses across several key performance categories. Our team uses a five-point scale to evaluate a mattress’ performance, with 1 being poor and 5 being excellent.
Pressure Relief
Rating: 4/5
The Emma Original Mattress provides commendable pressure relief due to its two-layer memory foam comfort system and zoned polyfoam support core. The memory foam contours closely to the body, evenly distributing weight and alleviating pressure in areas like the shoulders and hips. The zoned polyfoam adds tailored support, further enhancing pressure relief and aiding in spinal alignment.
Temperature Neutrality
Rating: 3/5
Our team found that the Emma Original Mattress delivers average temperature regulation for an all-foam bed. Its memory foam layers, though beneficial for pressure relief, tend to retain heat due to close body contouring. However, it uses convoluted polyfoam with an egg-crate design in its support core, which is slightly more breathable than solid polyfoam.
Motion Isolation
Rating: 4/5
The Emma Original scored high in our tests for motion isolation. The two layers of memory foam coupled with a dense polyfoam support core absorb and dampen motion transfer. Although light sleepers may notice movements from co-sleepers or pets, the overall construction and materials of this mattress make it a strong option for those prioritizing effective motion isolation.
Edge Support
Rating: 3/5
We found the Emma Original’s edge support to be average for an all-foam model. While the dense polyfoam support core provides some perimeter stability, the layers of memory foam in the comfort system tend to compress more under weight. This could make the edges feel less secure, especially when sitting or sleeping close to the sides.
Durability
Rating: 3/5
While the durability of a mattress is highly dependent on individual use and care, we expect that the Emma Original should last the approximate six to seven years typical of a high-quality foam mattress. Much of this assessment is thanks to the bed’s polyfoam support core, which is dense enough to prevent excessive sagging over time.
Ease of Movement
Rating: 2/5
The Emma Original struggles in the ease of movement category. Its construction, particularly the dual layers of memory foam, impeded movement during our tests, as it conformed to the body and was slow to regain its original shape. This could potentially cause sleepers to feel stifled, particularly those who change positions often during the night.
Sex
Rating: 3/5
Typically, a less conforming and bouncier mattress makes for a more ideal surface for sex. For couples who value discreetness, the memory foam layers in the Emma Original are virtually silent. However, the mattress lacks significant bounce, which could hinder movement. Additionally, its temperature regulation is less than ideal.
Off-Gassing
Rating: 3/5
The smell after unboxing a compressed mattress is referred to as off-gassing, which is caused by the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Emma uses foams that are CertiPUR-US certified, meaning they’re made without ozone-depleting chemicals and have been tested for safe levels of VOCs. Some people may still notice a slight smell when unwrapping the Emma Original, but it should dissipate fairly quickly.
What Is the Emma Mattress Made Of?
The Emma Original Mattress has a removable and machine-washable cover composed of a polyester blend fabric. The comfort system includes a layer of open-cell memory foam designed for temperature regulation. A second layer of memory foam is followed by a layer of high-density convoluted polyfoam that has three zones designed to evenly support heavier and lighter parts of the body.
All foams used in the Emma Original are CertiPUR-US certified to be free of a range of potentially harmful substances.

How Much Does the Emma Mattress Cost?
An average foam mattress costs around $1,100 in a queen size. Adding to its value, Emma also includes free shipping throughout the contiguous U.S. and a 365-night sleep trial.

Which Emma Mattress Is Right for You?
Emma currently offers three mattresses for U.S. shoppers: the brand’s flagship all-foam Emma Original, the Emma CliMax Hybrid, and an adjustable airbed called the Emma Shift Mattress.
The Original works best for people who benefit from more cushioning, particularly side sleepers under 230 pounds. In contrast, the CliMax Hybrid is slightly firmer, making it a better fit for back sleepers and those who prefer a somewhat sturdier and more responsive sleep surface. The versatile Emma Shift lets sleepers fine-tune the bed’s firmness level, but it’s also the most expensive of the three models by a wide margin.

Emma Mattress FAQ
The Emma Original performed exceptionally well for the side sleepers on our testing team thanks to its balance of structure and cushioning. Memory foam comfort layers allow the shoulders and hips to sink softly into the bed’s surface, helping side sleepers keep their spine in alignment.
The Emma Original has average temperature regulation for an all-foam mattress, but our team didn’t find that it trapped a significant amount of heat. Although the hug of memory foam can leave some sleepers feeling warm, we found this to be partially offset by the breathable polyblend cover.
Although our side sleepers over 230 pounds liked the Emma Original, testers in this weight category who sleep on their back or stomach felt they sank too deeply into the memory foam comfort system.
Emma is an international brand, originally developed and produced in Germany. Currently, most Emma mattresses are manufactured in the United States.
The Emma Original is not a flippable mattress and only one side is designed to be used as a sleep surface. However, you can rotate it to extend the durability of the mattress. The manufacturer suggests rotating the mattress monthly for the first six months and then every three months after that.
