Sleep Doctor’s Take: Layla Hybrid Mattress
Thanks to its double-sided design, the Layla Hybrid Mattress satisfies the needs of a wide range of sleepers and is one of the best beds we’ve tested in several categories. We especially recommend this model to anyone with changing firmness needs, as well as sleepers over 130 pounds. Back and stomach sleepers in this weight group were particularly impressed with the bed’s firm side during our sleep lab tests, noting that its strong coil-based support is nicely balanced by the subtle contouring of its thin memory foam layer.
Layla Hybrid Mattress: An Introduction
Layla Sleep specializes in flippable mattresses designed to provide two different sleeping experiences in one bed. The flagship Layla Memory Foam Mattress is an all-foam bed with a medium soft side and a firm side. The Layla Hybrid applies the same concept, with a pocketed coil support sore sandwiched between two distinct comfort systems.
The Layla Hybrid’s reversible design lets you choose between a medium soft (4) and a firm (7) feel just by flipping the mattress over. The mattress also features copper-infused memory foam designed to stay cool and resist odors.
We’ll discuss the Layla Hybrid’s key features, what it’s like to sleep on, and in-depth performance ratings from our testing team.
How We Review
Our testing team employs state-of-the-art technology to evaluate every mattress according to specific performance criteria. During our in-house testing, we focus on the most important characteristics that people consider when choosing a mattress. For the Layla Hybrid, we tested both sides to bring you all the details of this two-in-one mattress.
What’s It Like to Sleep on the Layla Hybrid Mattress?
How it feels to sleep on the Layla Hybrid depends on which side of the mattress you use. Our testers said the Layla Hybrid’s two sides feel noticeably different from each other.
The softer side’s thick memory foam relieves pressure on the body while providing a plush feel. During our tests, side sleepers under 130 pounds liked this side best.
The firm side feels more rigid, but it still has meaningful cushioning that comes from layers of memory foam and zoned polyfoam. On this side, you won’t sink into the bed, but you’ll notice the mattress supporting your body. Our team loved that they could move around easily on this side, and they thought the surface temperature was especially comfortable. The majority of our back and stomach sleepers preferred the firm side, as did side sleepers over 230 pounds.
Layla Hybrid Pros and Cons
Pros
- Dual firmness design suits people who want a choice of firmness or who want versatility in a guest bed
- Very good edge support
- Hybrid design and reversibility provide above-average durability
Cons
- Mattress is relatively heavy and may be difficult to move and flip
- Partners with different firmness preferences may not agree on which side to use
- Not ideal for sleepers who want a medium firmness level
Sleeping Positions, Body Weight, and Firmness
We rate mattresses on a 10-point firmness scale, with 1 being extra soft and 10 being extra firm. While Layla calls the two sides of its hybrid model Soft and Firm, our testing team gave the softer side a medium soft (4) rating, with the flip side receiving a firm (7) designation.
Different people have different firmness preferences, often depending on their body weight and their go-to sleeping position. Our testing team includes people with a range of body weights and sleeping positions to help our readers get a sense of how these factors may affect the experience of sleeping on the Layla Hybrid.
Layla Hybrid – Soft Side
Firmness: Medium Soft (4)
Under 130 lbs. | 130-230 lbs. | Over 230 lbs. | |
---|---|---|---|
Side Sleepers | 5/5 | 3/5 | 2/5 |
Back Sleepers | 3/5 | 2/5 | 2/5 |
Stomach Sleepers | 3/5 | 2/5 | 2/5 |
Layla Hybrid – Firm Side
Firmness: Firm (7)
Under 130 lbs. | 130-230 lbs. | Over 230 lbs. | |
---|---|---|---|
Side Sleepers | 2/5 | 3/5 | 5/5 |
Back Sleepers | 3/5 | 4/5 | 5/5 |
Stomach Sleepers | 3/5 | 5/5 | 5/5 |
Side Sleepers: Our side sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds found the Layla Hybrid’s soft side to be very comfortable. Sleeping on your side puts pressure on the hips and shoulders, and the plush, contouring quality of the memory foam helps relieve that pressure. The firm side was a better fit for side sleepers over 130 pounds who prefer less contouring to prevent too much sinkage into the mattress.
Back Sleepers
The firm side of the Layla Hybrid was particularly comfortable for back sleepers on our team over 130 pounds. People who sleep on their back generally need extra support for the lumbar area of their lower back in order to keep their spine properly aligned. During our tests, the soft side didn’t provide enough of this support for back sleepers weighing more than 130 pounds.
Stomach Sleepers
In our testing, stomach sleepers over 130 pounds loved the Layla Hybrid’s firm side. Firm support is essential for most stomach sleepers because it can keep their abdomen and lower back from dipping into the mattress and curving painfully. Our testers with a higher body weight found that the firm side of Layla Hybrid provided them with the necessary support and allowed them to rest comfortably. In contrast, most stomach sleepers noted that the soft side lacked firmness and support.
Combination sleepers
The Layla Hybrid can be a great option for people who often change sleeping positions, particularly if they weigh over 130 pounds. Our combination sleepers thought the firm side of the Layla Hybrid felt comfortable and supportive to sleep on, regardless of their sleeping position.
Our Performance Ratings
We evaluated the Layla Hybrid’s performance across a range of categories in our sleep lab. Our testing team gives a score in each category on a five-point performance scale, with 1 meaning poor and 5 meaning excellent.
Pressure Relief
Rating: 4/5 (Soft Side), 3/5 (Firm Side)
The Layla Hybrid’s memory foam comfort layer effectively reduces impact on your body’s pressure points, particularly on the softer of the two sides. This side’s thicker layer of memory foam offers extra sink and contouring, which provided great pressure relief for our side sleepers under 130 pounds. Our back sleepers and stomach sleepers over 130 pounds commented that the Layla Hybrid’s firm side offers a better balance of contouring and spinal support.
Temperature Neutrality
Rating: 3/5 (Soft Side), 4/5 (Firm Side)
Our testers found that the Layla Hybrid maintains a comfortable temperature, particularly on the firm side. Although memory foam has a reputation for sleeping hot, the Layla Hybrid’s copper-infused foams are designed to dissipate heat and keep the bed cooler. The coil-based support core also enhances cooling by allowing airflow between the foam layers. Hot sleepers may prefer the firm side of the mattress with its thinner memory foam that retains less heat and allows for better airflow around the body.
Motion Isolation
Rating: 4/5 (Soft Side), 3/5 (Firm Side)
The Layla Hybrid absorbs motion moderately well on the firm side and very well on the soft side. Memory foam is highly contouring, isolating motion so that a person isn’t disturbed by movements on the other side of the bed. The softer side’s thicker memory foam layer conforms more closely to sleepers and prevents vibrations from transferring to the other side of the bed.
The support core’s individually wrapped coils also contribute to motion isolation because each coil moves independently from the others.
Edge Support
Rating: 4/5
Regardless of which side of the Layla Hybrid you use, the edges hold up very well. While all-foam mattresses tend to compress and sag at the edges, hybrid mattresses contain a coil support core to resist this compression. A double row of coils along the perimeter of the Layla Hybrid’s support core adds extra reinforcement. Our testers felt secure sleeping or sitting on this mattress’ edges and didn’t have trouble getting in or out of bed.
Durability
Rating: 4/5
Hybrid mattresses tend to be durable, and the Layla Hybrid is no exception, with a coil support core that protects against sagging. As a flippable mattress, durability is further enhanced by the ability to use both sides. Regularly flipping the mattress can extend its lifespan by slowing the rate at which each side wears out. We expect the Layla Hybrid to last seven years or longer. However, its durability can vary based on factors like how much weight is applied to it and how often it is rotated and flipped.
Ease of Movement
Rating: 3/5 (Soft Side), 4/5 (Firm Side)
Our testers didn’t feel too much resistance when moving around on the Layla Hybrid, especially on its firm side. Memory foam is a bit slow to bounce back when pressure is removed, which can hinder movement, but the Layla Hybrid’s coil support core provides a springier response. With firmer polyfoam and only an inch of memory foam, the firm side won’t let you sink deeply into the bed, allowing you to move freely and without much effort.
Sex
Rating: 3/5
The Layla Hybrid Mattress provides a decent balance of bounce and traction for sexual activity. The pocketed coil support core is springy yet quiet, and the memory foam cushions the body comfortably. The Layla Hybrid’s strong edge support equates to plenty of surface area for couples to use.
Off-Gassing
Rating: 4/5
Our testing team found the odors associated with the Layla Hybrid after unboxing to be minimal and inoffensive. Generally considered harmless, off-gassing is a byproduct of manufacturing that is often associated with foam materials, and a detectable smell can develop after removing the packaging of a new mattress. Though you may notice a faint odor after removing the Layla Hybrid from its packaging, it should dissipate quickly — particularly if unboxed in a well-ventilated room.
What Is the Layla Hybrid Mattress Made Of?
The Layla Hybrid Mattress contains a pocketed coil support core in between two different comfort systems. The soft side has 2.5 inches of copper-infused memory foam on top, followed by 2 inches of soft polyfoam below it. This polyfoam is zoned, with more support toward the middle of the mattress for your hips and shoulders.
The firm side has 1 inch of copper-infused memory foam above 1.5 inches of firmer zoned polyfoam. All foams meet the safety and quality standards of CertiPUR-US certification.
The support core is built with 6 inches of individually wrapped coils. A double row of thinner coils runs along the edges to generate additional stability along the mattress perimeter.
The cover is made with a blend of polyester, rayon, viscose, and Lycra and is designed to offer a soft and stretchy feel. The cover has a zipper that allows it to be removed for cleaning, and tags on the cover clearly indicate the firm and soft sides.

How Much Does the Layla Hybrid Mattress Cost?
The Layla Hybrid Mattress is not a budget mattress, though its cost is slightly below average for a hybrid model. This mattress may offer particular value for people who want to take advantage of the dual-sided design, whether by flipping the mattress regularly to enhance its durability or by using the two firmness levels to adapt to changing support needs and comfort preferences.

Which Layla Mattress Is Right for You?
In addition to the Layla Hybrid, the company offers the all-foam Layla Memory Foam Mattress. The Memory Foam Mattress has a polyfoam support core instead of pocketed coils, giving it less bounce and reduced edge support. The all-foam model has a lower height of 10.5 inches.
Compared to the Layla Hybrid, the Memory Foam Mattress has a lower price, but it still provides Layla’s signature flippable, dual-firmness design. The all-foam model comes with a limited lifetime warranty, while the hybrid mattress comes with a 10-year limited warranty.

Layla Hybrid Mattress FAQ
The Layla Hybrid can be a great mattress for couples due to its solid edge support and motion isolation. Partners can comfortably sleep toward the perimeter of their bed without the edges feeling unstable. They also won’t feel each other’s movements much, especially on the softer side of the mattress, which was most effective at isolating motion during our testing.
Our testers who weigh over 230 pounds gave the firm side of the Layla Hybrid mattress an excellent overall rating. Heavy sleepers found the mattress very comfortable and supportive regardless of their sleeping position. Our tests showed that the soft side of the Layla Hybrid did not provide enough support for sleepers over 230 pounds.
People who are still deciding on their preferred firmness or whose needs may change over time will appreciate the choice offered by a flippable mattress. The dual-firmness design can make for a great guest bed that accommodates different sleep needs. It can also be a versatile bed for a growing child. As an added benefit, flipping your mattress regularly can extend its lifespan.
However, a flippable mattress is often more expensive than its single-sided equivalent. For people who want a medium firmness, a flippable mattress with soft and firm sides may not offer enough support on either side. In addition, in order to take full advantage of a reversible mattress’ longevity, you’ll need to flip this heavy mattress regularly and sleep on both of these very different sides.
Firmness is a matter of personal preference, so feel free to try out both sides and see which one you prefer. That being said, we found that sleepers under 130 pounds tend to prefer the soft side, while those over 130 pounds usually get more support and comfort from the firm side.
The Layla Hybrid Mattress is compatible with an adjustable base. Its pocketed coils move independently from one another, giving the bed plenty of flexibility when used on a movable bed base.
